I've just re-read this and this time I really enjoyed it. It is a little hard to suspend all our modern prejudices, since the "gothic" genre is so familiar but once you do, it is a lot of fun.

Lots of crying and fainting all over the place from every character, which got a bit annoying towards the end. An enjoyable read though.

I had to read this for a class in college, but even though the book was written in the late 1700s, I loved it. It's VERY descriptive, so if you don't like description of landscape, you probably won't get through the book. All of Ann Radcliffe's books are like this: sentimental novels/captivity narratives that include a lot of supernatural weirdness and read like travel logues, but I really enjoyed the plot and the characters. Oh, and her novels always end like the Harry Potter books — no matter how hard you try to figure out what's going on, you won't find out until the end when she tells you.
