Whole book is written like a diary, and supposedly Poe presented it as a real document when it came out, as opposed to some bullshit about being lost at sea, resorting to cannibalism, finding an island, and then being cannibalized. It's the "Blair Witch Project" of its day!

I really enjoyed this book. The first few chapters were a bit slow for me as Poe describes the ship and her crew with every minute detail highlighted. It's worth sticking with as when the drama starts it becomes very exciting. I felt as though there was a movie playing in my head called Die Hard Lost at Sea 1827. I could not put it down.

Probablemente no, pues jamás volvió a publicar otra novela.

I love Poe, but this is mediocre. The incomplete novel is one of my least favorite types, and it always ends up bugging me more than any other ending. The rest of the novel was fantastic and extremely well done. Poe is a genious, but needed to finish this one up.

Poe never ceases to fascinate. His only novel starts like a realistic narrative of life at sea, then turns into a horrific story of survival, and then morphs into a fantasy about aboriginal island tribes and an imaginary trip to a completely-divorced-from-reality version of the south pole. Quite different from the short stories and poems by which he is known, but still an intriguing read.

Poe should have written more novels--hands down.

This book is genius, even in its forever-un-finished form. Its diary-style and its steadfast, assured nautical terms create Poe to seem as sea-worthy as Magellan while telling this beauty. Poe grips Pym by the shirt, and whips him through mutiny, cannibalism, starvation, and many more misadventures with and without seemingly disposable companions. Just when the reader believes that Arthur Gordon Pym will be spared or rescued a new tragedy strikes and the spool of barbed wire begins to unravel yet another time.

Poe touches upon themes of all sorts, addressing them firmly-- consequence, survival of the fittest, God's elements, nature of man, to name a few.

The length is a bit short (and) because the last few chapters were never recovered, one can only feel a sense of longing of just what Edgar Allen Poe had in store for Mr. Pym.

Poe takes the reader on an adventure filled with terror and gore. I didn't know what to expect next. It was a facinating read, exploring the unknown on the high seas. Obviously through the text the reader will find that Poe has no knowledge of what it is like to be out at sea, but it does not take away from the brilliance of the novel. I felt a bit of fear in my chest at times. The ending may leave the reader questioning, "what is the meaning". This is a book that makes a person think about nature and human nature. Also, after or before reading my advice is to take into note that Poe was a northener who moved into the south. Notice which direction the character of Pym travels in the novel. Notice what color becomes predominate. An island with a thick black interior encased in a thin layer of white mimicking the situation in the south on plantations and eerily similar to the Haitian Rebellion of 1791-1803. Who are his companions and what happens to men in a hyper-masculine environment? Who is male who is female? North and South play a huge role in this book. Think of the time period in which Poe is writting. Maybe you can read it at a different level considering these.
