Had no idea what kind of book this was before I randomly fetched it from our bookshelf. Maybe not totally random since I'd vagely heard of Zola and have allways liked good old classics. 700 pages old danish-norwegian translation from the Belle Epoque was surprisingly easy digestible. Normally I don't read crime novels, but this one went a bit deeper into human nature than this otherwize superficial genre. A very vivid picture of a 19th century french railroad environment, where primitive human instincts ly just below the surface, and appearences are not what they seem...I enjoyed it

An astonishing trip to the deepest and darkest facet of the human soul.
While reading "La Bête Humaine" one cannot avoid to feel the "vertige de l'horreur".
The constant and eternal struggle between desire and the law, a man tore apart by his daemons and the bitter pleasure of transgression. "La Bête Humaine" speaks to us in the same language than Guantanamo or Abu Grahib...Why are human beings so willing to kill and destroy as soon as they are given the chance? Is it that industry and technology have turned us into senseless mechanical beings whose only purpose is to break the barriers and erase the limits?
Like a locomotive out of control the protagonist of "La Bête Humaine" does not know where he is going to or for what reason... the only thing that is certain is that he must continue his demolishing advance.

Interesting story about a pychopathic murderer. Inspired by the tabloid coverage in London of Jack the Ripper during the same time period. In many places, told through a stream of conciousness narrative using the murderer's viewpoint. Zola, pre-modern psychology and its tools, tries to illucidate the mind of a cold-blooded killer and his internal war between the desire to "do good" and the need to "do evil." My first Zola novel.

A randy-er book I have not read. Full of sex and murder. A bit overly pessimistic, but way too fun to not read.

Cuando Zola creyó en la literatura naturalista escribió obras como esta, que es un bello mosaico de la sociedad francesa del XIX en el marco del mundo ferrocarrilero, a través de la historia de un hombre que llega a convertirse en asesino.

Beautifully written, this is the first book in which the reader can't pitty any of the main character's fates. The book has everything from a mad man driven to kill at the sight of a woman, especially naked, murder by poison, to infidelity and the perfect crime.....An absolutly wonderful read!
