History has furnished us with quite a few examples of people in distress rationalising their way around their situation, from the Book of Job to Wilde's "De Profundis" the subject of the individual dealing with sudden losses and harsh implacable fate has cropped up again and again. But nowhere more movingly than this.

A profound influence on Dante (especially "The Convivio") the book is cast as a dialogue between the imprisoned and condemned man and the spirit of Philosophy (as with Dante, female). The dialogue consists of a progress from darkness to light and the course of which traces a path which leads from the merely subjective concern with immediate woes to the light of the Eternal where life and death, profit and loss, riches and poverty are all shown to be irrelevant next to the contemplation of the one who sees them all as a singularity.

Neo-Platonism is the predominant influence here (as with the Dante) and the book as a whole can be read as one man's personal voyage towards the calm acceptance of his impending execution and a statement of faith in the transcendency of God and the futility of human concerns, doubts and fears in the light of this.

As with the "Convivio" the book is a mixture of verse and text. The verse, in particular, is what seems to have caught the imagination of readers through the centuries and one image in particular,"The Eternal Wheel of Fate", seems to have come from this source.

On the whole, a deeply moving account of one man's quest for salvation and a fierce defence of the Spiritual over the Material life.
