The language is so musical it could be a lullaby. Never get this as an audiobook or you'll fall asleep. I've attempted to read this again and again and never gotten through. It's not because it's boring, but I just end up reading some passages over and over again for their beautiful language and never achieve the whole work. It's like a large art museum; you don't need to see the whole thing to walk away enchanted and fully satisfied.

An astoundingly faithful, adept translation which retains both Pushkin's verse form and the meanings of the text. Seriously, very impressive. Almost as good as reading it in the original.

Alas I cannot read Russian. According to my translators, Pushkin loses the essence that makes him Russia's beloved poet when translated to English. I found it a mediocre read and not at all worth the rave reviews I got from my Russian friends. Again, because I cannot read Russian.

Apparently untranslatable as far as the rhyme scheme, but still the classic work by the father of Russian literature. Fantastically fun to read, and *so* very Russian!

Went to see the preview out of curiosity for translation - and wow, was blown away first by the superb introduction on Pushkin "the chameleon", and then by the beautifully and masterfully, carefully rendered verse.. i'd just read on and on - out of mere pleasure from the language, so exquisite and impossible nowadays.. enormous respect to the translator.
