Fabulous book taking the form of letter writing narrative.. It's like Austen meets Richardson. Where the characters are very much multi dimensional.

I loved this book. I especialt enjoyed the interactions between the Captain and the Grandmother...great humour and romance. Fabulous descriptions of the social events of the late 18th century.

a book full of romance, humour and adventure. written in a style very similar to Jane Austen's, it also contains a hero like mrDracy! i was very glad to discover this author, who happened to have very much influenced Austen's writings.

A great novel from 18th Century England. Not in the same class as Tom Jones or Tristram Shandy, but lots of fun. An epistolary novel of a sensible girl’s transition from a sheltered life in the country to a worldly, principled and ethical adulthood, co-starring the usual assortment of rogues, rakes and fools. One of the usual themes in novels of this era is the lowly-but-noble girl bagging a member of the landed gentry. The approach in this book is that our heroine is at long last owned by her wealthy estranged father, so she’s suitably upper-class for the Lord who loves her.
