Once a vision of the future, now a reflection of what could have been. Still remains a possibility if permited.

I am beyond words on 1984. The beginning was a bit slow for me. I lost interest at first, but did pick up the interest as things went on...don't want to do a spoiler here. The Big Brother part did hit home...no I do not want govt to have total control of my life.

A good read and I do recommend and develop your own conclusion.

Given the subject matter, almost a personal read.

This is one of the most important books of the 20th century, but is it a *great* book? The general consensus would say 'yes' without hesitation. Personally, I'm less easily persuaded. Orwell's writing is occasionally ham fisted and leaden. He writes solidly, but it's not literature. His prose doesn't *sparkle*, doesn't excite the senses like a Fitzgerald or a Capote. Orwell has a sound grasp of politics, but he's much less secure on people. His characters come across as empty vessels used simply for the transmission of his ideas. They're so lifeless that even Tolkien's characterisation looks rounded in comparison. The relationship between Smith and Julia in particular is mechanical and unconvincing. However, this book's less about the writing, and more about the ideas, and they are electrifying. Orwell strikes me as more of a political theorist than a novelist, but there's clearly a great mind at work here and the book itself is earth shaking. It's very obviously not a prediction of the future but a reflection on the contemporary, to him, likes of Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. The tragedy is that, over 50 years after he put these ideas into the public domain with crystal clear clarity and revealed the workings of totalitarianism to the public, much of that which he envisaged has come to pass in the land of his birth. Mind you, as he concedes here himself, the revelation would be lost on those who would most benefit from the knowledge, oblivious as they apparently are to the surveillance state, where thoughtcrimes and wordcrimes are all too real, that England has sleepwalked into over the last 20 years. Orwell's more relevant than ever. Not a great novel then, but a great book, and an increasingly significant one.

The scenes at the end really upset me. Thought all the 'tearing off clothes' was funny though.
