I had to see the characters through this book. It's wonderful. Not many make me stay up until 2am these days, but this one did.

I loved this story...another great English Classic. About a country doctor's daughter who becomes indispensible to the town's richest family and largest landholders. And how she eventually steals the heart of one of their sons. She has to navigate her way around her stepsister's foolish betrothals, and their consequences and deal with a silly step mother whom she sees does not appreciate her or her father nearly as much as she originally let on. And not to mention the secrets she must keep. It's a great story.

Liked it, but didn't realize it was published as an unfinished work until was finished with it...books without endings are so irritating!

I can't explain why I seem to love stories about the lives and life styles of the folks who peopled Great Britain in the 19th century. Certainly, the talent of the authors has a lot to do with it and the social history of the times. Seemingly, no so far removed in time, this is really an alien landscape, the world having changed so much since then - if not personal motivations and emotions. Gaskell's wit and insight makes for an enormously enjoyable reading experience. Be forewarned, it's a long book, actually all the better for it.

talk about the ultimate in un-satisfaction! why did she have to die before writing the last chapter??? granted, we have a pretty good idea what was going to happen, but still...sigh. good story though. i like her homage to charlotte bronte with her governess-esqe character being named miss eyre.
