Stayed up till 1:30 to finish the last play..."Antigone." Always admired her. Started it because I was thinking a lot about Ajax one of my favorite's....never read Sophocles plays featuring him and can't say I was too impressed with it. King Oedipus is also included, and who wouldn't be interested in THAT string of horrors!

Only 7 of Sophocles plays survive. The 4 included in this volume, are probably not as well known as the other 3 (his "Theban" dramas), but they are still very good. "The Women of Trachis" tells the familiar story of how Heracles (Hercules) was fatally poisoned by his wife who was misled into thinking the blood of Nessus the centaur would restore her fickle husband's affections rather than kill him. The other three are set in the Trojan War or its immediate aftermath. Ajax tells of the madness and suicide of the Greek hero Ajax the Greater. Electra is the story of Agamemnon's faithful daughter, awaiting the promised return of her brother Orestes from the war to avenge their father's death at the hands of their mother Clytemnestra and her lover. Philoctetes is the strangest story of the 4, in which Odysseus, and the son of Achilles, have to convice Philoctotes, who Odysseus stranded on an island 10 years previously, to rejoin their efforts because it is prophesied they cannot win without him.
