This would probably have been hard to read...but listening made me feel like I was at a playListened to this...far exceeded any expectations I had...Ruby Dee's narration really added to the deep south flavor and emotion. A real coming of age story...only much later in life! Would definitely recommend.

Zora's was an anthropologist before she was a writer. Her book, Their Eyes Were Watching God, is testimony to her education in anthropology. She portrays the different social classes and different ethnic groups within the south. The story has charm and emotion as well as pain and romance. Not only is this a work dealing African American culture and empowerment , but it is also a feminist work about the freeing of an African American Woman from the social bonds within her own culture. Her grandmother says to her that they are the "mules of the world". Jannie, the main character, changes this and redifines herself as a woman, and african american and a human being.

Very good book. A little hard to read at first as it's written in Southern dialect from the 20's. Great story about a woman's journey to find her inner peace.

I thought this book was really good. Zora has a way of making the important stuff stand out and makes you realize what Janie had to go through to get to where she wanted to be in life. Its a rad book. One you don\'t want to miss...
I thought this book was AMAZING!!! I loved it! Zora has a way of pulling you into the book and making you see things from a different angel. It tells the story of Janie, growing up into a woman and telling her own story back to her best friend and you get the chance to hear it and read it yourself.

I was intrigued by this book when I read the inside cover at the bookstore. When I began reading it, I was drawn in to Janie's story, and Hurston's writing style. Her Southern style has a lyrical quality to it, and I find I have to really take my time to reflect on the dialogue, which make the story more satisfying.

My "on deck" books are two more Hurston titles "Jonah's Gourd Vine" and "Moses Man of the Mountain."

This is a novel for the ages. Not only is it a wonderful story of self exploration and growth, but Hurston use of figurative language and symbolism is second to none. Her juxtaposition of "vernacular" with that of the narrator is almost breathe taking at times.
I use this novel in my literature classes to show students that strong figurative language enhances writing, and makes a novel worth reading again and again. You will never look at a road the same way again.

With dialog written in the Southern African-American dialect of the 1930s, this novel can be a bit daunting to the modern reader. As an important piece of 20th-century American literature, it is nonetheless, a very worthwhile literary endeavor, capturing the self-discovery of Janie Crawford -- an independent, positively spirited woman who refuses to live in sorrow, bitterness and fear.

Hurston's way with words is breathtaking...even through the dialect and colloquial language.

"...love ain't somethin' lak uh grindstone dat's de same thing everywhere and do de same thing tuh everything it touch. Love is lak de sea. It's uh movin' thing, but still and all, it takes its shape from de shore it meets, and it's different with every shore." <3

I fell in love with Zora Neale Hurston's writing when I first read this novel as a senior in high school. After reading every piece of work of hers that I can get my hands on, I must say, I am still in love.

Hurston amazingly so creates a world in the Post-Reconstruction South that is not only dynamically and effortlessly real but is also translated into a dialect that can be only found in that time and place. Names such as Tea Cake and Jody Smith are just parts to the adventurously feeble climb of Janie out of the hold of a deep and historic past and into a frightening yet bold future.

Another fabulous book! The dialect was a little hard to grasp at first but I grew fond of Janie. Her confidence always amazed me, and Tea cake was just as pleasurable. A good read.
