Nobody creates such evocative characters as Murakami. The moment one of his creatures opens their mouth, the world becomes silent to listen to them. A chinese prostitute, a beautiful sleeper, a violent workaholic, a lonely teenage girl, two love hotel maids, and a long, long night to go.

Not the best Murakami novel I've read, not the worst. I thought the story could've wrapped up a little better. I felt that it left a few loose ends. However, I also think that was exactly the purpose of the story as it takes place over the course of a single night. Not all of life's problems can be solved or explained in a mere 8 hours.

Awesome read...the evocative descriptions take you right into the story then they fuck with your mind....I'd ride this puppy again.

Feels more like a collection of short stories hastily arranged into a full on novel. Still very enjoyable and relatable, at least to me. If you've ever spent an overnight in the city waiting for the trains to start and pondered what tenuous connections link reality between night and day then this is the book for you. I just spend my allnighters getting drunk ;)
