2nd in the 44 Scotland series. Another good book where very little happens but you keep reading and want to learn more about the characters.

I love the 44 Scotland Street series, and this (the 2nd one) is perhaps the most heart-warming one of them I have read (I only have the first 3 books so far). The chapters centred around Ramsey and Betty Dumbarton seem to be filler, having little relevance to the rest of the plot, and I found them to be boring. However, the rest of the book is wonderful bedtime reading, especially Bertie's story. I am looking forward to reading the 4th book, which seems set to give Bertie a more central role. A funny, insightful and uplifting account of life in Edinburgh. I would recommend this series to anyone.

Love the story of Bertie, his desperate but sad mother and the others in this ongoing story of life in Scotland street.

Great tales from Scotland. No matter where Alexander McCall Smith is, he personifies the beauty of a place through his characters.

I liked this installment better than the first, likely because it was mostly about Bertie. The cast from 44 Scotland Street returns but little is added to their story lines. There were more humorous moments and although I would have liked to read more about Matthew, Pat and company I am glad that Bertie's dad took and stand and dear Bertie is slowly getting some of the adventures he longs for. I am just going to have to catch up with everyone else in the next book.

I have just finished reading this book and would highly recommend this and any other of Alexander McCall Smith novels. It is the second of a series of books in the 44 Scotland Street series and is set in a street of that name within Edinburgh. It has rich characters with the common thread of living in Scotland Street or surrounding area. The gentle humour is excellent and the keen observation of humanity is tremendous.I can recommend the book for "recreational", light reading while relaxing or travelling, for example. Alexander McColl Smith has several different series of novels and is perhaps best known for the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. It is good, clean, enjoyable reading material.
