Chapters ran first as a serial in a newspaper in Scotland, about 1000 words a day ending, often as not, in little or larger cliffhangers. The characters continue from the first two volumes -- these are volumes, more than novels -- and they continue to engage each other or find themselves in improbable, quirky episodes. So the first thing is that if you didn't like serialized comics or cartoons, you will probably be happier not trying to get into this.

The Scotland Street series gets better with each book as the characters develop and the twists keep you wondering what will happen next. There are lots of unexpected and interesting situations in this book which means you just have to keep on reading.

as usual, i love it... but how can he write sooo much? i think he has 5 series and it seems like there's a new release for each one every year.

This book is the third in the author's series of the 44 Scotland Street Novels. The life stories of the tenants, ex-tenants and friends of tenants of 44 Scotland Street continue to unfold. Some have exotic adventures like little Bertie going to Paris to play with a teenager orchestra and anthropologist Domenica going to Malacca to study pirates. Other have romantic encounters like Pat. McCall Smith, as usual, has done extremely well in making all the supposedly mundane happenings into an exciting read. However, some of the story lines are notably weaker than his earlier books. Nonetheless, one of the most touching stories which I find in the book is the eulogy of Ramsey Dunbarton, the boring lawyer. It reminds us that many normal and boring people around us have morals and values which are to be respected and revere.
