First and last third were riveting - couldn't put it down. Middle went on too long. A chilling insight into the human condition. Chilling, because you can see how any of us might - in the right mental state and a particular set of circumstances - get onto a path that is inescapable. I won't say any more than that ;-)

An intriguing book. So dark and yet so funny. People who went to /live in Cambridge will love it. As with all Faulks' books he goes on a bit towards the end - he should have ended it two chapters sooner. But still, a very good book.

I really liked this book despite it's darkness (i usually don't do dark). The characters were exceedingly well crafted. I am looking forward to reading more by Faulks.

Am reviewing this halfway through reading the book. Classic tale of the outsider, quite slow to start I thought & quite an unsympathetic, nothing little man. But have kept with it. And now appreciate the skill with which this was written. Can't wait to see how it ends!!

Seen from the damaged mind of Engleby - thought provoking and not an easy read. Well worth reading though and it does give "normal" people an idea of mental problems.

I enjoyed this book after reading Human Traces, which IMHO it is not as good as. Engleby is an interesting, witty and sometimes engaging character. At the end of the book we see him finally disintegrate. Faulks stated in an interview that Engleby is not mentally ill. If not, is he responsible for his actions? The book presents a somewhat hopeless picture of this kind of disorder.

Took a while to get into it, but then couldn't put it down. Mike is fascinating character and slightly disturbing that i could see some of myself in him!! I could understand why he was often depressed by the world around him. He was also very amusing and made some apt observations - suggesting you have to be slightly insane to understand the world. Also liked the comments on non-linear time and what can be classed as 'real'. I couldn't fail to have sympathy for a character who describes his life as destroyed by endless unhappiness...

Starts slowly, but stick with it (maybe I've been reading too much Harlan Coben....). V. Brit humour, so you have to be into that. Ultimately a little dark and disturbing - probably because many of us will see just a little of ourselves in Michael.

I think this is an extremely intelligent, astute and thoughtprovoking book; the psychic tangibility of the flawed yet intriguing main character carries it all the way.
Engleby, despite all his shortcomings as a human being, is most profoundly human.
This book has mind, heart and soul.

Very unusual book. Not really sure how to rate it. Very different. It took me 2 weeks to read and I usually read a book in a day to 3 days. The print was too small, but it was more the subject manner. I never really connected with Michael Engleby. He wasn't very likeable. I didn't dislike the book, but didn't like it as much as the friend who gave it to me.

Totally unputdownable. I had to switch my phone off on the train back from Birmingham as I just couldn't let anything interrupt it. Really gripping story narrated by a guy with some kind of social skills deficiency. Just read it - you won't be disappointed.

Love the main character, he typifies the clever, devious seventies man with soundtrack thrown in for good measure. Totally engrossing.
After completeing,I find it is one of the best books I've read to date. Stebastian Faulk's writing touched my very soul.

What is most interesting about this book is the rather subtle unreliability of the narrator's stream of consciousness - one can tell that Faulks has worked on psychiatry before.
That being said, Engleby himself can be a quite annoying fellow in his pedantic and self-celebatory autism. At least the very lovable female protagonist who, sadly, disappears before p. 100, offers a much needed relief from Engleby's shortcomings.
From Jennifer's disappearance onwards catastrophe is looming and is entirely predictable by p. 200.
One good side-effect of the sometimes tedious account of the narrator's resistible rise to the higher ranks of journalism is that one learns a lot about the 70s and 80s in Britain(London in the decade after the Swinging Sixties, the Brixton riots, Maggie Thatcher's intimidating demeanor and even Maoism as an intellectual fad at Cambridge)
All in all, if you enjoy a read in which it occurs to you very early on that there is something deeply wrong with the main character(the narrator)but you can't quite pin down what exactly is going on until you get some help from the author in the final denouement, Engleby is a novel that you should consider reading.
At the very end Faulks shows a brilliant sense for the tragic. The last words of the novel are Jennifer's again and whether or not you liked the novel, they will move you to tears.
