A so-so crime/mystery novel form Norway. It was somewhat entertaining, but I had the killer pegged very early on. Typical of crime/mystery novels, it had a renegade detective with his own demons, psycho killer, damsels in distress, and several twists and turns. The person that recommended it said that it was similar to Stieg Larsson's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, but it was not anywhere as good as Larsson's novels.

The cover proclaims "the next Steig Larsson" which influenced my purchase.I'm not sure of the comparsion but as this was such a good read, there will be no complaints from me. This is a fast paced crime novel. As with the Girl...trilogy, credit should be given to Don Bartlett for the translation. Previous novels here I come..

I'm not normally a lover of Crime Fiction or the Thriller genre, however I do like Scandinavian fiction and somehow this must have accidentally got purchased via Amazon Recommends. Anyway - a happy accident. A very scary tale to read as the first snow of winter falls. The first snow of winter falls in Oslo and the snowman claims another victim. Harry Hole, alcoholic divorced detective (is there any other kind) seeks to hunt down the serial killer. Many suspects are uncovered, but as one by one we understand they could not be guilty, the chilling climax unfolds. Literally had the shivers reading this - not like me at all, and was too scared to stop reading and go to sleep. Definitely not like me. Clearly well written, and very well translated. May now go back to the beginning of the series and read all the Harry Hole novels - but don't e put off if you've not read the earlier ones, there's really no need.

I was initially disappointed because I couldn't read "The Redeemer" - so I had to skip to The Snowman. (The Redeemer wasn't available in the US yet...) I hate going out of order, but what're you going to do?

No Disappointment with The Snowman! One of the best Harry Hole stories! I've heard Scorcese's directing a Hollywood film of this - I can't wait! Who will they cast as Harry??????

Wow - fab detective novel set in Norway. Harry Hole is the lead detective trying to solve a series of bizarre disappearances and ultimately catches Norway's first serial killer. I won't spoil the story line but be prepared for a roller coaster once you've got your head around all the Nordic names. Read it if you can deal with some of the sadistic touches but imho it's nowhere near as gruesome as Stieg Larsson!

I guess I have to mark this as a favorite when I cannot put it down halfway through the book. Nesbo takes the reader through an intriguing murder mystery of a serial killer who leaves snowmen as his calling card. This is Nesbo's 7th book, but he does a nice job of updating new readers of the Harry Hole series. I will definitely start the series from the beginning - a great read if you enjoy mysteries from this Norwegian author.

Jo Nesbo novels rate right up there with Henning Mankell and Stieg Larsson, with the mix of characters that are believable and with a mix of humor and brashness that always has you turning the pages to get to the always good finish, another winner for Nesbo.

Once again, the Scandinavians do not disappoint. After reading and enjoying the works of Karin Fossum, Henning Mankell, Johan Theorin,Camilla Lundsberg, Arnaldur Indridasson, and of course Steig Larssen, I was more than happy to try a new author (well, new to me). The Snowman is the first Jo Nesbo novel I've read, and I must say I was very impressed. It is a dark, twisted story with plenty of twists and turns, and many characters to boot. The storyline is rich and complex, but Nesbo is a master storyteller and in his capable hands, the plot flourishes and entices the reader to keep on reading, while trying to unravel the mystery that is the Snowman.

Harry Hole, recovering alcoholic and detective extraordinaire finds himself trying to solve a complex case. Birte Becker, an attractive woman, mother and wife, is reported missing. The only clue left is the discovery of her beloved pink scarf (a present from her son) wrapped around a snowman. As Harry Hole and his partner, the attractive young Katrine Bratt dig deeper, they discover an unpleasant and chilling fact - over the years, a startling number of women who are wives and mothers have gone missing, never to return. Who is stalking and preying upon these women? When another body is discovered, also a wife and mother, Hole reluctantly faces up to the fact that he has a serial killer on his hands, and works tirelessly to solve the case, even as he finds his own personal life collapsing around him.

What made this such a rewarding read was the way the author constructed his plot - throughout the novel, I was piecing together the puzzle pieces, trying to figure out the connections between the victims, the motive, and how Hole goes about solving the case. The story is multi-layered and the main characters are deeply complex - there's Harry Hole the 'tortured' detective who is haunted by the ghosts of his past; there's Katrine Bratt, newly assigned to Hole and who appears to be harboring secrets of her own; and, there's the Snowman, a ruthless and merciless killer bent on his twisted agenda. Even the minor characters are interesting, thanks to the way Nesbo weaves them into the story - each character has his/her own story, and this proves important in the overall picture. This is one of those crime novels that had me thinking about the story long after I had finished reading it. Highly recommended.
