An extremely vidvid and compelling fictional uptake on Jesus' time in the desert told through the eyes of those observing him from a distance. One book that is often said to be very hard to put down...

not so much of a fan in resurrection or miracles created by GOD...it's hard to convince the presence of Jesus in the story...the turning point of the story is encouraging by showing the bravery of women who normally enslaved by the men.

Richard wrote that the book is depressing. Yes it is, but it's meant to be. And surely not all books need to be uplifting? Books are there to invoke feelings and this one manages to do this by invoking pity at the life of the salesman's wife, horror at the Jesus side story and finally amazement at the final page twist.
what a book. not only Graceis manages to weasel some poetic metre into a lot of his sentences, he scores 10/10 for originality, 10/10 for implementation and he produces a perfect book. read this.

Read it twice. The first time was for the story; the second time was to pay attention to the transformations each of the characters made. Beautiful writing.

This is the story of Christ's forty days and nights in the desert told from the perspective of a travelling salesman. An excellent observing novel about things people consider important these days. It is rather an anti-parable, making it didactic in a reflective way.

A story from the times of Jesus...an interesting twist on the unintended (and undesirable) consequences of Jesus' miracle of giving life.

Weird. Even the author does know what he thinks of it, as he has given at least 3 completely contradictory statements about the book in interviews and on websites. Will be a good film and feels like it has been written to be one.

If you are looking for a book for pure pleasure, then I'd recommend you to go for "Quarantine" or any other book by Jim Crace. Just pureness!

Really great read. Musa the nietzschean Ubermensch against the reliigous slave like personalities, and what happens when that person comes face to face with Jesus. I know the landscape he describes as I have been there and I could picture the story very easily.

This is a peculiar topic to choose for a ‘secular’ book; unless you wish to belittle faith and Christ. But this does not appear to be the author’s intention.
Initially Crace takes a particularly humanistic view of Jesus; yet surprisingly as the story progresses he allows space and respect for the miraculous and the divine. Why could not God (or Satan . . .) use basic realities of humanity and nature to produce the miraculous (or ‘diabolical’)?
Although possibly more important, is that through this story our own desires, motives and behaviours are challenged; particularly if one has a faith.
Bizarrely, the final elements of the story divert significantly from the account depicted in the Gospels, but not in the way you might imagine. But nevertheless the conclusion of the text ultimately portrays the same ultimate truths of God and Christ traditionally held by those of faith, if not through the traditional historical narrative.
Which, to paraphrase my original point(...!) is a peculiar conclusion to reach in a secular novel.

Weird, beautiful, hallucinatory. I preferred it to José Sarmago's _Gospel According to Jesus Christ_ (although it's been a long time since I read Sarmago, to be fair).

It's one of those books that you end up with more questions than you started with, especially the subtle questioning of the nature of narrative, history, theology and reality, and whether the story truly belongs to the victors.
It also asks about the assumptions that we make when presented with a particular data set, and whether those are ever really right.

I had a love/hate relationship with this book. It has stood out in my mind for a few years now as one of the most intriguing books I have ever read. The antagonist of the story was dark and understanding his evil-ness changed the way I thought about evil forever.

Liking this. A little weirded out about the 'mysterious guy from galilee' but found it cheeky and kinda sweet that jesus made his first appearance to steal someone's water in the desert...

But I cannae stand it when writers go overboard with the authenticity stuff when writing about something in a historical context. I'm sure that three hundred years from now, someone writing about our time will not have to describe all the intricacies of his/her characters' accroutements like so:

"His jeans had brass studs at the corners, and tapered gently to the ground, the hem scuffed where it had trailed slightly as he walked. Stuck in the pocket of one of his denim pockets was a purple device that could flip open to show two faces. One face was a multi-colour LCD screen, while the facing panel bore ten numerals and two symbols on a series of buttons that could be pressed in specific sequences whenever he wished to communicate with someone."

Eeewwww....
