Shantaram is a very mixed bag. The first couple of hundred pages are wonderful. You get drawn into a totally foreign world in Bombay through the experiences of the narrator who based this story on his own experiences. However, you soon start to notice the abundance of cliches and the very one-dimensional description of people. There is also a certain self-aggrandization on the behalf of the narrator that gets tiresome.

Thus, the book is certainly worthwile for its colorful description of life on the shadow-side of Bombay, but it is not good prose.

Remarkable for the chronicle of the author's life and experiences. Certainly not a literary masterpiece. Not my most favorite

I found the central character in this irritatingly self obsessed and pretty hypocritical. (He is devastated when he looses his friends in India, but barely mentions the fact he left his own daughter behind in Australia.) Far more ficticious events than real happenings in here i think. However, some compelling parts and does give some good insights into India and its society.

Learned a lot about India, but a good editor would have reduced the size of this book to avoid the the belabouring of the obvious.
