This book is unfortunately like most sex I've been having for awhile -- all rising action, no climax. This book shows how a story can have an interesting premise and still bore you to the point of absolute tears. I randomly pulled this off the shelf one day last week at the library and read it this week. Thinking that this might be a light but fun read, I was disappointed when I found that aside the from a few mentions of my beloved Grateful Dead, I was disappointed with the work. Perrotta sets up some fairly interesting character identities which, unfortunately, become predictable or absent, some of them disappearing for large portions of the book and than reappear when convenient. However, the premise and the concepts, plus some atleast fairly solid writing, allows the reader to get through to the conclusion of the tale.

An engaging story, but I got the feeling that Perrotta was conflicted about how it should end, so he just didn't end it. The reader is left to decide how the loose ends get wound up. Somehow that left me feeling vaguely unsatisfied.

It was a good time to read this book for me in this hostile election cycle. The "abstinence teacher" is a very liberal, anti-religious person who resents the new sex ed curriculum as much as she resents her kid's soccer coach--a born-again who starts praying with her team. But as much as she wants to hate him, and as much as his church wants him to scorn her and pray anyway, they realize that, with all that stripped away, they actually like each other. And the shrillness of the sides they support become less and less attractive. I felt like it was a good narrative for moderates like me who are tired of people on both sides pointing fingers and yelling at each other. There is some middle ground.

Bad ending! Blah! I was not happy with this book. It just kind of fizzled out (and never amounted to what I hoped for to begin with). What the hell kind of ending was that? Decent book that just totally collapsed into nothingness.

It started off laugh-out-loud funny...but then it got ambiguous and none of the characters stood firm on anything. it got a little convenient and contrived, and I got disappointed toward the end.

Well...I hope that people who read this book take it for what it is -- an extreme tongue-and-cheek look at 2 sides of an issue. As one who works for an abstinence progam, we would never behave or condone the actions of the abstinence program portrayed in this book. Also as a Christian, I would never behave or condone the behavior protrayed in the Christians in this book. I was appalled by the pastor in this book -- stalking they people from his church! And on the other side, I don't believe that most teacher who teach sex ed and don't believe in abstinence are showing their students old issues of Playboy or are talking about their personal sex life. My only fear is that people who read this book or see the movie when it is made will take this as truth about who Christians are and what abstinence programs are really about. I am afraid that people will not think for themselves and just believe what they read, hear and see.
