Interesting setting but something doesn't click. Writing is by turns flat and florid.

If you like Italy and history, especially Venice, this book is a fun read. The characters aren't that deep and it can be somewhat predictable at times but overall it was enjoyable.

Author shows a lot of enthusiasm for the beauty and long history of Venice. Lots of local insight is given by author who obviously loves Venice. This book is a good historical novel. Makes me want to go back to Venice again. How can one not appreciate the history of this inspiring place.

A marriage collapses in London, and the wife, Nora, moves to Venice, Italy with the intention of becoming a glassblower like one of her Italian ancestors. How she starts life over here is only part of the story. The rest concerns a mystery in the life of her ancestor who lived in a much more dangerous Venice of the 1600s. Some of the plot situations in this novel are very interesting, but it is flawed by unlikely turns of events and a silly romance. The glassblowing business is nicely described, but there are errors in language. As a genealogist, I was annoyed by the use of the word "ancestor" when the meaning was clearly "descendant." A very light read.

Venice 1681 and Venice today. Two parallel stories of a family of glassblowers. An interesting story of one of my favorite places. The setting and characters are a bit flat. The story line is good, but could have been more polished.

I was a bit disappointed by the first Chapter and the repetition of expressions like "innocent graze" more than once in a single paragraph... it seemed immature, but though the book is not brilliant in that matter, it is fine to read. I did enjoy the description of Venice and its history, the details about glassblowing, but much less the love story which felt kind of flat. Overall it is an ok reading.

Walter's Art Museum December book club selection. Parts are excellent, but sometimes I feel as if the storyline is suitable for a made-for-tv movie on the Oxygen network. Some of the history and literature references are really interesting though.

I loved this book and the author's parallel of the two time periods and the intersection of the storylines. Loved the artistry describing glassblowing and the city of Venice itself. Makes me want (as ever) to visit! Leonora's quest for discovery regarding her ancestor and the inner desire to follow in his shoes was very interesting. I do, however, feel the romance between she and Alessandro could have been developed a bit more, as his sudden committment was not very believable.

This was basically a love story spanning two very different time periods with some good historical information about Venice and glassblowing. The writing was a bit raw in places (this is her first novel), but nothing a good editor couldn't have fixed.

Good story especially if you've been to Venice and can picture the places the characters are talking about.
