This Hesse novel was right up there with Glass Bead Game for me. As a matter of fact, I would suggest this as a first read for someone approaching the writer. I followed this one with the forementioned novel which I would recommend as a second read. The stories are complimentary in style.

My favorite book by Hesse and possibly my favorite book of all time. Two friends, a christian monk and a restless wanderer, part ways. One travels and loves every woman he meets, the other devotes himself to God. Story about two very different people finding themselves and understanding their lives in their own way. Beautifully written and wonderful to read, I recommend this book to anyone.

Man kann es nicht besser beschreiben als Thomas Mann es tat.... Hesses Roman Narziss und Goldmund setzt mit grosser sprachlicher Schönheit ein und scheint in einer mittelalterlichen Zeitlosigkeit zu schweben, die dem poetischen Bedürfnis dieses der rohen Aktualität widerstrebenden Geistes entspricht, ohne darum seine schmerzliche Fühlung mit den Problemen der Gegenwart zu verleugnen....ein wunderschönes Buch mit seiner Mischung aus deutsch-romanischen und modern-psychologischen, ja psychoanalytischen Elementen...eine in ihrer Reinheit und Interessantheit durchaus einzigartige Romandichtung.
