Very dark and brooding. Matheson does a great job of unfolding the trying relationships of the characters to each other and to Hell house. Does a great job of being scary without the use of too much blood, shock and awe. Matheson's description of a thumb being broken by hyperextending it backwards is done more gruesomely than most can do describing an entire body being broken.

I love this book!!! It is one of the best horror books I've read--both I am Legend and Hell House are excellent. And the short stories are absolutely riveting. Richard Matheson became a literary idol for me after I read this.

Liked the book... liked the movie (Legend of Hell House) first and surprised at the changes Matheson made when he wrote the screen play.

Richard Matheson's "Hell House" is, quite honestly, the greatest haunted house book ever written, followed closely by King's "The Shining." This book made me want to be a writer.

Supposedly meant to scare the pants off me, it was more about sex than anything else, I found it dull. I was expecting more horror as this is what is was meant to be, a dull version of rose red.

This was actually really disturbing i enjoyed the suspense and the mystery that Matheson brings to yet another of his many famous novels this had the horror, had the spooks and gave me a chill keeping me on a nail bitting edge to the very shocking end.

Richard Matheson has been known to right some of our societies best horror novels. The author illustrates the effects of the paranormal on a single person as well as how it affects society. The way we see ourselves and the way we perceive can change dramatically and within moments of encountering the paranormal. Hell House starts out and continues to be one of the most well thought out books I've ever read, the story is rather unique because it dives into the history of the house, how it began and how it continued to change people's mind sets years and years after the building was shut down. However, the story, the horror and the imagination crumble as it reaches the book's climax and ending. One moment you are excited to find out what will happen next to the characters, then the following page you are in disbelief at how quickly the author tries to end it. Still frightening and still good...just doesn't end well...

A nice little horror classic from veteran Richard Matheson. This book was written around the same time as Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House," but frankly, this story works a little better.

I enjoyed this book. I love the Will Smith movie, but this book is very different. More like the Vincent Price movie, "The Last Man on Earth", but this book has a better ending. I did not read any of the short stories at the end.

Toted by Stephen King as the scariest haunted house novel EVER, I couldn't have been more disappointed. Twisted? Yes. Macabre? Yes. Scary? Terrifying? Absolutely NOT. Climax could be seen coming a mile away, and its dénouement is as confusing as it is pathetic.

This is seriously the scariest story which I had ever read in regards to haunted houses. Hell House is not ordinary haunted house, it is literally a portal to a realm of twisted, tortured and craze happenings all under the control of a supernatural being, so demented and sadistic that is capable of horrifying acts beyond anyone's imagination...

Matheson is a master and Hell House is his masterpiece! It's a riveting ghost story that is unrelenting. It is also a great mystery. Three of the four characters in this book think they know what is causing the haunting at Hell House and they are convinced they each know how to end it. They become blind to other possibilities and death and destruction ensue. At 301 pages this book isn't long and because of the pace, it can be read quickly. There are no chapters, rather there are time-stops. The story takes place over just a couple of days and I like this type of pace. If you have read "I Am Legend" or you just like a good scary ghost story, this one is a definite "must read"!

This is probably my second-favorite Matheson novel, just behind "I Am Legend". It is a great, scientificly-minded, telling of a haunted house story. Try not to get attached to any of the characters.

I read it because I have no new books and because Basil said so! Hahaha! =DI'm not a big fan of horror fiction, but I loved this book. Basil says the "I Am Legend" (as in the book) is also good, so maybe i'll be reading that pretty soon too.If you're going to read this, I'll give the same suggestion Basil gave me: read it during the night for that all out creep factor. =D
