the first onehundred pages were really boring. I thought the whole book was going to be about some stupid rich kid Jew piloting a plane - but boy was I wrong. The rest of the book was intense and quite good. Entertaining, dramatic, romantic, and horribly gruesome. Ignoring the first hundred pages, (which could have been condensed into thrity or fourty pages), the book was engrossing and much better than expected.

Lovely. Brilliant. Only Wilbur Smith can weave action into a love-story so seamlessly. And of course that magical place Africa! Oh it's so lovely to read about Jabulani and the various animals there. Wherever David goes, South Africa, Israel, or Spain, you get the complete feel of the place and are trasported there. There are sad moments too, heart-wrenching-ly sad. But hope leads the way in this beautiful tale of love, war, and fighting to protect what you believe is yours. A great read.

this book was my first novel i read as an adult. my mom introduced it to me by first telling me a synopsis and making me cry. i then had to read the full story and have read it several times since. Wilbur Smith has had many novels turned into film and i have often wonder why he hasn't with this one. i have read many books since good and bad but this 1st has never been replaced.

The book to beat all books....set in two of the most fascinating countries in the world, it is a book that explores war, love, hatred, sorrow and is a cover to cover read. I have read this book over and over again and it never ceases to amaze me how Wilbur Smith has managed to capture the essence that is South Africa and Israel and their respective peoples. This definitely has to rate as my favourite book of all time.
