A fairly typical detective yarn. Smart cop. Difficult personality. His own worst enemy. This is a little more grisly than most detective stories, but done well enough and set in a bleak setting. If Igmar Bergman wrote mysteries, he might have chosed Aberdeen as the setting for his detective.
2nd in the Logan McRae series. I don't think he will be liked by the tourist industry in Aberdeen.

The usual grim but occasionally funny tale of our intrepid police investigatro Logan Macrae. If you have read Cold Granite, you will find this in the similar genre.

It sheds Aberdeen in a 'lovely' place !!

A gritty, but riveting crime fiction novel, set in Scotland.

This read like the script for an episode of 'Taggart', but with the ante upped on the levels of swearing, and the body count.

This is the second book of his I've read recently, both excellent.A fair bit of torture and gruesome deaths in Dying Light - had a nightmare caused I'm sure by the graphic 'finger snipping' scene!!Glad I don't live in Aberdeen anymore.

Usual great stuff. I'm now waiting for the next Macrae stories to come out. I might even wait until there's several and then read them one after an other - much better than one, then a year later another etc. Am I the only one who does that?

A good filler if you like detective books - but not as good as Ian Rankin or Val McDermid.

Was back in "Fittie" again after 40 years absence. Was good to be able to relate to the suburbs and streets, only Police HQ was "Lodge Walk" in my time.
Good read.

This smart series continues to please and surprise.

While the mystery is splendidly knotty and the characters strong and particular (I've grown too fond of The Bastard Simon Reddie for him to be such a minor character. All of this is top-notch for the genre.

What has me going out tomorrow to get the sequels is that MacBride is continuing the sense of his characters moving in private isolated worlds, cut-off from each other as well as from the clues-- more interested in their private dramas (I have to get home on time or I'm sleeping on the couch, or "Hey! porn!") than in the plot elements. This breakdown of communication is wonderful and really makes the novels snap and surge.

Series like this are why bookstores should stay open until...um...1:16 in the morning.

Stuart MacBride is fast becoming my favourite crime writer in Great-Britain.
Dark, funny, and with that unpronouncable aberdeenian accent, it is a great read for thriller lovers.
Note though, there is a disturbingly violent scene in the book.
Stuart MacBride is fast becoming my favorite British crime writer. It is dark, funny, I love the accent of Aberdeen in the text.
A bit gory sometimes (probably one of the most disturbingly violent scene in this book)

Took a while for all the disparate strands to come together but ended up enjoyable once again. Not as good as the first book and I wish DS Macrae would toughen up a little (can't let Jackie fight all his battles) but never the less very enjoyable.

I love Stuart MacBride. Full of gallows humour and a cop who gets it wrong as much as he gets it right - Logan "Laz" McRae is brilliant! This should be made in to TV but staying faithful to the books not like usually happens!
