What I most like to Rankin is the description of Edinburgh in such vivid detail that you feel you have lived and you know the place very well.A murder mystery as usual, Rebus in his best. Quite exciting the way he presents the Catholic versus Protestant problem, comparing Scotland to Northern Ireland and suggesting that a terrorist organisations is up to sabotage the festival and initiate an uprising in Scotland.

Absolutely brilliant author, having lived in the same village as Ian and gone to the same school, I make a point of reading his rebus books. I can almost 'smell' Edinburgh!

This is the first Rankin book I tried to read, but got to say I was disappointed and couldn't finish it...The characters just weren't engaging enough for me -even Rebus wasn't likeable, and I found myself just not caring whether he solved the mystery or not.

Can't really go wrong with good old Rebus. I love him (the character) despite all his flaws. One of those books you'll stay up really late finishing.

As is true of every Ian Rankin novel, Mortal Causes is filled with vivid descriptions of a brutal murder. The graphic descriptions send chills down your spine.Combined with the very human approach to Rebus' detection. His struggle with life and insight into the lives of many cops, the book is a gripping read.Even cops need to rehabilitate. This aspect of the book really had be turning its pages till the end..

Every time I read another Rebus story I want to go back to Edinburgh and find some new places. I definitely want to find Mary Kings Close on my next visit (and steer well clear of the Gar-, if it actually exists).
