I absolutely loved this book & will definitely read more of deon meyer's books! Excellent story telling, weaving 3 stories in one. Even knowing who the killer is, the pages just flew by. Would recommend to anyone who likes crime thrillers.

I like the way the author switches between characters, seemingly randomly, with no introduction, sometimes after only a single paragraph, and then the character isn't seen again as first-person for a big chunk of the book - a very good tool.

Ah, what a pleasure. A darkly atmospheric police procedural set in Cape Town. The plot, involving the tangled fates of an alcoholic Afrikaans cop, a City Bowl sex worker, and a vigilante killer out to avenge abused children betrayed by South Africa's malfunctioning justice system, is beautifully put together: slow burning with an elegantly resolved climax. The sense of place and the mise en scene is dead on accurate; and characters come to life through the author's compassionate eye. I enjoyed it particularly because I recently finished Mike Nicol and Joanne Hitchen's weak and nasty Out To Score, which tries to 'do' organised crime in Cape Town, but which succeeds only in being thinly imagined, nastily unlikeable, and gratuitously pointless. Don't read that, read this! One of the best pieces of popular fiction to come out of South Africa lately. Fuck Coetzee and Nadinny Gore-diner: Marlene van Niekerk and Deon Meyer are the new hopeful voices of white South Africa
