I almost put this book down in the first chapter, because the subject matter seemed so disturbing -- a young girl, now in heaven, narrates the story of her rape and murder by a neighborhood weirdo and how her death affects her family and friends. I'm glad I stuck with it and finished the book, thought, because it's a lovely story with nice prose and a satisfying ending. Even gives you a bit to think about regarding what happens after you die.

This is a book written for adults that has high teen appeal. The storytelling style is very unique because its gentle tone softens the true evilness of a child predator and murder. Grief and loss have never been so interesting, let alone miraculous. If you liked A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer or Elswhere by Gabrielle Zevin, this book may be a good choice for you. It's a tough read at times, so only pick it up if you are ready to have a good cry!

This book was bad. Then it was quite good. Then it was bad again. I did cry when the dog died. But that's normal.

I loved this book. I thought it was told from a unique perspective – Susie’s voice is calm and sweet as she attempts to understand both what happened to her and the effects of her apparent brutal murder/disappearance on her family. I felt the anguish and resentment of her family over their loss. Alice Sebold tells a story that feels real – the suspicion of “feeling” like something isn’t right at “that” house but not being able to put a finger on it.

I really liked this book. I saw the movie before I saw the book...I think this helped me to visualize the whimsical parts of the book. I think without the movie though some of those parts I could have done without. Overall though it was a great read. :-)

So much promise, so much disappointment. The Lovely Bones is lovely when it gently and intimately explores the bones of tragedy and family from the inside out. But where it branches into the intangible and supernatural, it stumbles. And the ending, the crossing-the-veil climax to consumate the high school crush was trite and a tad sleazy. Are we culturally so sex obsessed that we can't have value and beauty in love beyond physicality?

huh, that was one of the big dissapointments.I was really looking forward to reading it after the promissing reviews, expecting to get something really dark and heavy, (especially the tag messy heads was appealing) but instead there were some teenage romances of growing up kids. Some of the characters were described so well in the begining that i got the feeling they will be of big importance and evolve into something which will led to a peak of a story but it turned out boring and without meaning. i woudln't recommend.

This is another one of those books that cannot really be described accurately on a dust jacket. The premise of a murder victim first-person narrating is a bit odd. And the subject matter is a bit of a downer. And it doesn't follow the traditional formula of 'will-they-catch-the-murderer-living-in-our-town' books, if there exists such a formula. This is where I would write "But...", but that is a habit I'm trying to break. So I will say simply that I enjoyed the audiobook and recommend it.

A thought provoking and hopeful novel which intelligently and sensitively deals with the most horrific of crimes; the rape and murder of a little girl, who then watches from heaven as her family and friends try to cope with her death and find her murderer. The author beautifully describes the anguish of the little girl and her family, the child unable to help her family, the family desperately seeking justice. Heaven is portrayed as a serene version of Earth, with the pupils at school studying Vogue magazine. I have to admit, I found this idea of heaven quite depressing even though the author tries to make it seem relaxing and pleasant. Overall, I highly recommend this book.

I couldn't put this book down. I enjoyed getting into the different characters and had a love/hate relationship with some (e.g., the mother). I loved seeing one person's idea of what heaven might be like. I haven't brought myself to watch the movie because I'm afraid of losing the picture I have in my head of the story.

A strange and haunting tale; full of sadness and the inevitable misery associated with the murder of a young girl. I found the voice of Susie believable as she observes and tells the tale of her loved ones on earth. The subject matter is very disturbing and I found myself on several occasions wanting to put the book down and forgetting about it forever...and yet there were some very tender, real moments that made up for the hideousness of the crime perpetrated on her.

The Lovely Bones, though not one of the worst books I've ever read, was mediocre and bordered on outright boring. The plot dragged on and on, and I never once found myself wanting to keep turning the pages. In fact, I felt the opposite; I kept putting this book on hold and only resorted to reading it when I could not sleep. The struggles that the family faced were touching; however, if Sebold had chopped the novel in half, the novel would have imparted the reader with the same amount of inspiration and "profoundness."

I had read this book a couple of years ago and the brutal opening scene of the book had me spellbound for weeks after finishing it. Unfortunately besides being gruesome at first it had offered very little value after that. There's "lovely" paragraphs in the book no question about that and Alice Sebold is really talented but the book just did not speak to me. Abruptly ended life, broken marriage and some nice prose but far from a classic.

Loved it! Could have done without any icicle death, but other than that it was pretty perfect. It does what great art does: it makes you feel something that you've been taking for granted. In this book, it's our living, breathing bodies, and all they can do. The book made me enjoy filling my lungs with air, sweating, touching, all that stuff we can do while we're still alive. No better narrator to tell us something about life than a dead one.
