My single favorite book of all time. Janet Fitch's prose is fantastic and the story is fantastic and everything about this book is fantastic. Exposes the true human condition without acknowledging its accomplishments and makes the heart ache for Josie, the main character and her lost love and world and dreams.

I would not recommend this to anyone. The writing itself was good, very descriptive and I really felt like I was in the setting, but I wanted to slap all the characters, especially the main, Josie. All she could do was blather on about how much she LOVED Michael. The guy was a selfish prick that you should have left. He killed himself, and while that is so tragic, (I'm not trying to diminish that, because everyone handles suicide differently) but I didn't care about her or him AT ALL. It was painful to read and more painful to finish. I found myself speed reading alot of it, which I don't like to do, but I just didn't want to hear Josie whine anymore. I don't think that was the intention, but she came across to me that way. I want to love characters and care what happens to them and be excited to find out what happens to them. I forgot these people instantly, didn't care about them when I read it and found it a chore to finish.

read this if you want to know how i think or how i would think if i was a rich momma's boy who shot myself in the skull in 29 palms. fitch writes so well about the dark recesses of the human condition and it's not just because i saw so much of myself in all the splattered gray matter

My favourite book EVER! The first and only book I had to wipe the tears from my eyes to be able to read AND I sobbed most of the time. Why did I like it you say? Because it really, REALLY hit home. At the time I was in the boat with the main character to say the least. A Must Read!

i love this book! it is one of my all time favorites, it is beautiful in its sadness and belief of the "true world." my real question is, however, did michael have sex with meredith?
