Darren Shan and friend, Steve Leopard acidentally found a flye at an illegal circus namely Cirque Du Freak... A mysterious man named Mr. Crepsley (a vampire) wanna make Darren as his asistant... so Darren must die (technically speaking)

This is an AWESOME book :D i recommend for people who hate twilight cause its SOO diffrent from twilight i mean the vampires dont sparkle and they make more sense!

First book in the Cirque du Freak series. Darren and Steve sneak out to an old theater to see a freak show and soon find themselves deeper into this mysterious world than they ever could have imagined. During the show, Steve, a horror buff, recognizes one of the performers as a vampire. He confronts Mr. Crepsley after the show and demands to me made into a vampire. Meanwhile, Darren is fascinated by Mr. Crepsley's trained (and very poisonous) spider, Madame Octa. He resolves to use his knowledge of Mr. Crepsley's true identity to blackmail him. Darren's price for keeping silent? Madame Octa. Darren plays with the spider in his room and starts teaching her tricks. Disaster strikes when Steve discovers the secret. Now Darren is faced with a dilemma--just how far will he go to save his friend?

VERy disturbing... not sure how I feel about it but I couldn't put it down and am compelled to read them all... I thought Darren was younger than he actually is but now I see him as a teen. (I saw him younger than that at first) alot of exclamation marks!!!!! But I got over it. It is disturbing that is for sure. I think I like it... maybe love it...

I love all of these books! Darren Shan is an excellent writer and I love the end to this series. One of the best endings I've seen. These books are what got me hooked on vampires and horror books.

I watched the movie a couple of days ago and i can see why they made the movie out of the first two books instead of only the first one. This book was good, a quick read. Got the rest of the series on hold at the library.

I simply adored this book. The only greivance I have with it is "I did this! I did that with pointless and annoying exclamation marks!" It just toned down the book for me, and I was looking forward to proper chilling stuff. But, it was amazing. :D

At only 257 pages, this is a fast-paced read about a boy protagonist who has an odd obsession with creepy-crawly spiders, especially those that obey commands when they hear the sound of a few notes squeaking through a tin whistle. Destiny hands Darren Shan a winning ticket to a traveling freak show where what he witnesses after the curtain closes will alter his life forever. With short chapters that end in cliffhangers and make the reader want to turn the page, this is a great start to a vampire series that will appeal to reluctant readers and adolescent boys. They will drink it up!

A delightfully creepy young adult novel. Only thing I'd pan about it is the author's fondness of exclamation points.

This series is good but very juvenile. It would be a great read for pre-teen males. I decided to read it because I always read the book before seeing the movie.
