This novel centers on the development and consequences of a turn of the century affair between a 41-year old man and a 15-year old girl. It was slow to start, but became more interesting as the story progressed. Shreve always does a great job of creating believable characters and capturing the turn of the century world (several other novels she has written are set in this time period). The novel centers on an inappropriate and tragic affair is populated with very likable characters. When these characters make decisions with disastrous consequences, it makes the reader think of the long lasting consequences of simple decisions in his or her own life. The book is very long, but it is well worth reading.

Despite finding the (unbelievably only 15) Olympia and Haskell (what a dick) and their uncontrollable urges irritating, I did actually enjoy this book. It is well written for the most part and did succeed in me feeling some empathy for even the characters I didn't like - heck. I've steered away from Anita Shreve because I didn't like The Pilots Wife (can't remember why)but will take another look at other books of hers now.

I think she is an amazing writer and this book helps prove it. It is hard to put into words everything that is going on in the book, so I just suggest you read it and find out!
