Must read for any Salinger fan. Doesn't get the attention it deserves, oft overshadowed by Catcher In The Rye. The protagonist is, however, as powerful as Holden Caulfield himself. Written in a way which only Salinger is capable of, fluent and effortless. Involves characters that range through all his other novels (exc. CITR), an insightful window into Salinger's mind. In my opinion, quite autobiographical; subsequently extremely signigicant for any fan.

I think Raise high the roof beam is one of the loveliest story i have ever read..
I especially like the short tale on the first page..if that tale doesn't make you read all the story than let the book.. but I'm sure you will return to this story :)

Classic Salinger, although maybe more necessary than desirable - all the same, the completist must read this for a glimpse into J.D.'s universe. While not on par with, say, Nine Stories...still better than many authors' best.

Only 4 stars instead of 5 because, despite the first story's greatness, the second one's a little dry.

I have to re-read this, but I always loved the story where all the characters are stuck in a car on the way to a wedding.

This book is actually a melding of two stories which delve deeper into the history of the Glass family, who was introduced earlier in Salinger's works.

"Raise High" followed the adventures of Buddy as he prepared to attend the wedding of his brother, Seymour. However, Seymour fails to show up at the wedding, and the rest of the story continues as Buddy converses and invites the family and friends of the bride over to his house to escape from the hot day. Although this was a good story that brought other things to light about the Glass family, it was no way comparable to "Franny and Zooey" or the short story that first introduced us to Seymour, "A Perfect Day for Bananafish".

"Seymour: An Introduction" is a paradoxical title for the next story, because as mentioned in the previous paragraph, the reader has already become fairly familiar with the character of Seymour. The reader follows Buddy's mind as he describes his elder brother whom he deeply admires, but it almost feels like you're stuck in the mind of an ADHD. He jumps from topic to topic and the transitions are almost impossible to follow - I found my mind wandering quite a bit with this one. If I hadn't already had an interest in the Glass family, I probably would not have finished this story. It was long-winded and not very thematic. It does, however, bring the reader closer to the Glass family and give insight into the background of the different characters presented.

It is also worthwhile to mention that one should definitely read Salinger's first two stories regarding the Glass family, "A Perfect Day For Bananafish" and "Franny and Zooey" in order to gain an interest in the family before embarking on "Raise High" and "Seymour". Without having gained a love for the characters first, it will be difficult to enjoy and understand these stories at all.

This book has been very odd, yet interesting to me--not because of subject matter (it's the continuation of the 'Franny and Zooey' siblings stories), but because the first 'story' I loved, the second, I've struggled to get though. Instead of it being written by Salinger's voice, he's writing through the voice of the main character (Seymore)'s brother, Buddy (who's an author). I honestly can't stand it much. I want Salinger, not "Buddy"...and I feel ridiculous saying that, being that I know it IS Salinger. Ah well, I'm still a fan. After all, authors can't write perfection everytime...that is, unless their John Stienbeck. :)

The problem with this book is in Seymour: An Introduction. It's the bulk of this "collection" and is by large very forgettable. There is no real narrative (as it's written in the first person in direct communication with the reader) and I think what Salinger was trying to accomplish could have been done more efficiently (mostly by cutting pages or by making the end resemble the beginning). The first two or three dozen pages are really a chore to read. Raise High the roof Beam, Carpenters is standard Salinger fair, interesting and entertaining. I'd probably enjoy these both a lot more if I had read Banannafish.

Loved it as a seventeen year old -- but only because there was no more to be had of "The Catcher in the Rye," and I was convinced this was good enough. It isn't. Horrible, self-indulgent, maudlin.
