Loved it. This is a book about what happens when child geniuses grow up. In their youth, they're overpraised, cherished, adored. Once they grow up, they're disoriented, unhappy, desperate for some sort of meaning or authentic experience. If you can relate to that, I'd recommend this book.

Probably my favorite J.D. Salinger book, although Catcher in the Rye is the classic.

This is the book that blew my little literary world wide-open. Martin (below) has got it right on when he speaks about Salinger's fantastic characterization. Franny, Zooey, the whole Glass family, and their ghosts and memories of Glass-passed... they were in the room with me. And when Zooey talks about Christianity and the difference between that and Christ, that conversation is one a person has wordlessly in their own soul, if they're lucky. And Salinger gets it! This book is more than a novel, it's an understandble, real-life, disection, debate, and unanswerable question about religion and philosophy.

Did I mention that I enjoyed it?

Far better that Catcher in my opinion.
Very witty and at times hilarious.
From a writers perspective brilliantly crafted.

I'm not crazy about The Catcher in the Rye, but Franny and Zooey (and the other short stories about the Glass Family) established J.D. Salinger as my favorite author.

I completely agree...JD Salinger has a way of reaching people on such a real level. The way he captures his characters and their "realness" and their internal struggles never ceases to amaze me. Hands down one of my favorite authors of all time. Franny and Zooey asks the questions about religion that most of us refuse to vocalize, and he captures it so brilliantly! If anyone has read Nine Stories...is it possible that A Perfect Day for Bananafish was about Seymour? I just had a thought and I was trying to parallel the stories, but I don't have my copy of Nine Stories with me, so I don't know for sure...

Okay, I think I was holding my hopes to high for this book, to be much like 'The Catcher in the Rye' and it let me down.

Most people will tell you to start your Salinger with Catcher in the Rye. Most people would be right in telling you that it's a fantastic read, but to truly find yourself blown away by incredible characters, writing, family relationships, profound wisdom, and just overall brilliant writing, check out Franny and Zooey. Anyone that has, or ever will, perform on a stage must read this book.

I'm one of those weird people who didn't like Catcher in the Rye. However, Salinger can kick ASS at the shorter stories. Franny and Zooey basically takes place in only three conversations, that last of which is sort of like a long monologue. It's not for everyone, but I absolutely loved it. How all of this thought could float through Salinger's head and end up so beautifully sorted and written is beyond me, but I won't question it. So real and so smart, at the same time. Philosophical genius.

Catcher in the Rye is still my favourite, but an excellent time distortion and character piece. I love it.

Read an old and very important letter while simultaneously bathing, shaving and smoking. Those glass kids ARE talented and I always attempt to replicate this stunt whenever conditions allow. An old, steam-dog-eared copy of F & Z tends to serve as an appropriate substitute for the letter as long as you've time and enough cigarettes. If you have read the book enough times for enough years it's like an old letter anyway. Get to know it. It's a constant friend that changes as you do.

I wasn't so into it. I liked catcher in the rye a lot, but I was a lot younger last time I read it too. This one, I get what he's getting at, but does he have to be so goddamn Wordy about it? I mean, always rambling, always bringing in random characters to the discussion who don't even RETURN, for chrissake, to do anything later.. just this guy, thinks he's all smart or something becuase he's an actor.. talking at his sister the whole time, because she's obsessed with some PRAYER or something, HONestly..

An uneven collection of stories that partly show Salinger's genius but also reveal what an insular, self-serving writer he can be -- and there's nothing quite wrong with that, but it sorta diminishes the point of publishing.
