An uneven collection of stories that partly show Salinger's genius but also reveal what an insular, self-serving writer he can be -- and there's nothing quite wrong with that, but it sorta diminishes the point of publishing.

Salinger excels with dialogue and scenery. We get to know the characters very well, their struggles and histories. Still, I appreciate Salinger's short works much more than his novels. There was no money shot in this for me. I need a money shot.
