An engrossing story - could not put it down until I knew the ending! Also could not get the image of Kelsey Grammar as Van Tassel out of my head!

Took a little long to get to what you knew was going to happen. When you did it was good as it didn't unfold exactly as expected.

I read this book on a 6 hr train journey and it whiled away the hours for me. It is an interesting, thought provoking, heartrending look into the lives of two people trapped in a less than ideal marriage - set in a time when love and marriage didn't necessarily go hand in hand - when women were often obliged to marry for security, status, respectability. Although I didn't particularly like either of the main characters, I felt for both of them. I've only read a couple of Anita Shreve books, she's seems to be a great writer but she doesn't do happy.

sad ! Intersting to read from the mans prospective. I little slow until about 1/2 way thru, but kept my interest SAD !

This book is compelling in the sense that it raises more questions than it answers about the characters. What are their motivations and hidden agendas? A good book for discussion since everyone will have a different take on the characters.

Unputdownable! Despite its simple storyline, the book is very engrossing and engaging with its flowing prose and narration. One of the few novels where a woman author has written almost completely from a man's point-of-view.
