Having lived in Spain for many years I certainly enjoyed the historical aspects of this book but I felt the story line wasn't as strong or a captivating as it need to be.

Really enjoyed this. I realised that I knew very little about the Spanish Civil War. My book group didn't seem to like the ending but it all fitted for me.

This is basically a tale of misfits. Most characters do not fit in the reality the were born in. They find themselves cast into a surreal situation (the Spanish Civil War aftermath during the second winter in World War II), to find out they they're even more misfit. A must read also for the accurate historical background, after Zafon this is a non Spanish masterpiece about maybe one of the darkest period in Spain history.

Enjoyed it. Seemed to give a good description of what Spain was like just after Franco tool power, which was of interest to me personally having lived there previously. It tries to give a balanced perspective of life under the Republicans, with the Russians dominating the political atmosphere of Republican Spain and the fight between the monarchists and falangists after Madrid is taken over. The story is compelling and it keeps you gripped till the very end !

Oh God this was tedious. I got two chapters in and realised I didn't care if they lived or died. But then it had so much going against it: set during the war (well,the civil war) (that's the Spanish civil war for any Americans reading this), full of male characters, women characters bound up in their male counterparts, blah blah blah. Don't pick this one up, you'll be bored to tears. The rest of the reading group finished it out of sheer bloody-mindedness, but i just threw in the towel.

A great story, but it loses something in the telling. I struggled to empathise with any of the characters, and the ham-fisted sign posting meant I'd predicted the ending by about a third of the way through. A bit more lightness of touch from Sansom and this could've been a classic.

A bit dry - it never really took off as far as I was concerned. I was interested in the historical information about the Spanish civil war and there was a very good description of what it was like to get caught in the street in a bombing raid, but the characters were a bit flatly drawn and the historical fact and the fictional story didn't really gel very well. It was also too long at 530 pages.

For a thriller, this was a slow burner that didn't really grip me until I was quite a way in. Offered interesting insights into Spain of the 1930s/1940s.

An excellent book. A bit slow-paced but certainly gets across life in Spain in the post-Civil War years very well. Recommended.

Gripping, especially towards the end. Not many authors can transfer eras and times but Sansom manages to write just as well about the 40s as he does about tudor times. Worth the read.

This book is fabulous - once you're hooked into it, you care about the characters and their outcomes. Really interesting insight into Madrid in the aftermath of the civil war - made me want to find out more. As the book progresses it becomes more and more compelling - read the last section in one sitting - could not stop!

Well, this was an interesting read but in places it felt like an accumulation of historical facts on everyday life in Spain at the time and in other places it was a bit outrageous, like the shoot-out scene... maybe it was written with the prospective film in mind, but this book showed its seams in places

The book is interesting and engaging, and I managed to read it even though I was feeling rather fluey and distracted, which is high praise. However; it seems a touch contrived and was a bit too long. I find stories such as these lose their power if they are over about 350 pages.

was really disappointed with this the front cover said that if you like Sebastian Faulks you would like this...well they were wrong, too long an drawn out, they could have missed out the middle section of the book

Absolutely brilliant. The characters he writes are believeable and with a real sense of depth. Drew me along and I found reading it addictive. Very different from his Shardlake series but just as good.
