McPhee's monography of the Pine Barrens, a by-passed and by now possibly bygone wilderness at the edge of the East Coast megalopolis, is a page-turning classic, covering subjects as diverse as history, geology and botany.

I'm reading it for a course I'm taking on the Pine Barrens. It's a must-read for anyone who has some connection to the pine barrens of South Jersey.

A little text-bookish, but interesting. It was written in the 60s, so it's a look at how the pines were rather than how they exist now.

Very good for what it is -- (i.e., an ecological narrative from the late 1960s) -- the best parts of this book are those about the unique and fascinating people living in this area!

If you've never read McPhee, you should. If you don't like basketball, start here. (If you do, check out A Sense Of Where You Are.) If you live in New Jersey, this should be required reading.
