It's a classic Niven book, this one is the beginning of the end of the Known space series, so to speak. Its the best and most compelling read of the bunch.
It has everything that makes known space, plus add protectors in the mix. Good Stuff.

Okay, so I fell for this all the way. Louie Wu and his motley crew, the puppeteers, the whole thing. Fun, fantastic.

An easy read. Nice mix of romance, adventure, and science. You have some basic archetypes vying for control, but there are still nuances to the characters that make them fun, along with some cute problems they run into. One of the races of the major characters is Kzinti, which some of you might recognize from star fleet battles. I guess Niven, the author, wrote some stuff for Star Trek and added this race. There is also an homage to Kzinti in the old video game Wing Commander where the major enemies of humanity are also a cat-race called the kilrathi, and WCII takes place in the Niven Sector. An interesting take on probabilities, breeding, interspecies conflict and intergallactic travel.

This was a little too technical for me. I just couldn't visualize the world.

Aside from the central conceit, not a great novel. The sequel, Ringworld Engineers, is a superb work, however, and it's worth reading this (on its own, for that matter) to get to that.
