I was totally enthralled when I first read " The White Dragon" and thrilled when discovered that there were two before it.
I have visited Pern many times since and have reread all of the Pern books available every couple of years or so.
I love the dragons and their riders and the people of Pern. I look forward to visiting Pern as many times as possible.

This is one of the few books that I've read several times. It's my Lord of the Rings. I'd love to see movies made from the three books, but Hollywood does a terrible job with dragon storylines.

I read the dragonriders of Pern series back in the 1980s, met Anne McCaffrey at an awards ceremony for a contest that I won and she had judged. I found her to be a warm, sincere, and wonderful person. Her son Todd is not co-writing the series.
I love Anne McCaffrey! I read the Dragonriders of Pern series in the 1980s, met Anne after winning a writer's award which she judged, and found her to be a warm, sincere, and kind person. She also loves Maine Coon cats.

This is a must read fantasy series, now co-written by her son Todd.

This is the second time I have read this book. It is a very good Scifi series. Humans have populated a distant planet called Pern. Every few hundred years the planet is assaulted by destructive beings from space called Threads. This has lead to the isolation of the colony and loss of technology. The planet has devolved into feudalism and rely on the protection of "Dragons" and their human riders to protect them from Threads.

McCaffrey's Pern novels manage to capture the best of fantasy writing without trotting out the same old dwarves, elves, etc. Even the dragons are far from run-of-the-mill: being telepathically linked to their human riders from birth allows these beasts to "speak" in the story

Anne McCaffrey has the ability to pull you right into her story and describes everything so well you are sure you can reach out and touch an actual dragon! I loved these books as much as Tolkein's, and that is really saying a lot!
These books are so amazing! Anne McCaffrey is Tolkein's equal in creating an alternate reality. I love that I can reach out and touch the dragons, feel what her characters are feeling, and really put myself into these stories!

Anne McCaffrey is a fantastic author, and I love the ideas and stories she has come up with. There are, however, two main faults. One is her outlook on her characters. Most of the villans are closed-minded fanatics or selfish dictator types, while most of the main heroes/heroines are these noble individuals seeking change who have a corny sense of humor and a rather embarrasing dramatic flair. In her books, I usually find the dragons and the secondary characters more fulfilling than the main ones. Her entire outlook on the humans of pern just seems unrealistically optimistic to me. In addition, there is never any real sense of danger throughout these books. The thread is supposed to be a terrible and horrifying threat, but it's taken care of far too easily, and far too quickly.
Don't get me wrong, the trilogy is on my must-read list for any science fiction and fantasy fan, but it's the world McCaffrey creates that makes the whole thing more than just another read, not the characters.

I have read the entire series. And have been cheerfully re-reading the entire series, for the past 25 years. And, God willing, I will continue to do so for the next 75!

Ms. McCaffrey's verbal imagery has woven a rich tapestry in my mind. Whenever I pick up one of her Pern books, I am instantly transported to another world: of struggles and delights, pastoral yet modernizing. Wars and peace, love and hate, new discoveries and old comforts. Part of me longs to visit a world like that, and I thank her for providing me the opportunity!

If it is 'wrong' to be 35 years old and delight in reading books about dragons, well: then I don't want to be right! Her Pern series is like "comfort food" for my brain.

While Pern is an interesting world, it is somewhat fascinating to see a science-fiction fantasy written by a female author. The emphasis in these books is wholly on describing the society and on the relationships between the characters. The problem is that nothing much really happens. In all 3 books, for example, one person is killed. There are two fights (both one-on-one knife fights). I know this basically points out the difference between what most men want in a sci-fi tale and what many women want, but while I certinaly appreciate character development and interrelationnships, I also want SOMETHING to actually happen!

I fell into the Dragonriders series by accident (or fate?) and absolutely love it! Did you know Anne McCaffrey likes American bacon and vistors often take her some?

One of many fun and interesting worlds to visit as a youngster whose imaginations ran amok :)McCaffrey does a great job involving the reader in her tales of dragons and those that care for them.I was often immersed in her tales and felt I was there on the planet of Pern.Cannot say enough good things about her series of works regarding this wonderful place. Likely the best of the lot would be the harper trilogy.

Female protagonists always add to the enjoyment of a book for me. Maybe because I get to see things from a slightly different perspective, or maybe just because the world needs more balance! Either way, this is amongst my all time favorites. You simply can't go wrong with saving the world, corruption, defiance, coming of age, dragons, the works!

Anne McCaffery is my fav author #1. All her books are keepers. I would own all of them, mostly in hardcover, but I donated them to the local library so that all could read her. Now I am slowly building up my collection again.

In order to enter the world of Pern, you must commit yourself to reading at least 200 pages. You will not regret it, if the read is not too difficult for you. The style borders on old English and the descriptions allow for your imagination to fill in the complete picture. Don't back track trying to remember why the Green Dragons and their riders are special, just keep reading. Soon you will be flying through the Pern sky fighting Thread and protecting the Weyrs. Once you allow yourself the time to enter into this world you will never want to leave. There are dozens of stories, not always in series. Enjoy the writing.
