I have started this book a number of times, but finally made progress when I got sick for 3 weeks right before I had the baby. (I have to be honest, I skipped a lot of the long songs, which I know is cheating) Then, after I had read over 900 pages, I simply had to finish it. I am glad I did because the end is a lot different than the movie.

I first read Tolkien as a youth (say, oh, 7th grade). I have read the series at least twice since - definitely one of my favorites.

I first read these books when I was young, my dad kept pushing them on me. I have read many books that I put on a favorite list, but these books are my true favortites. Something in them just speaks to me and I could read them over and over again.

If there's any advice I can give any reader who dives into the Lord of the Rings series it's this: READ THE HOBBIT FIRST!!! I'm always amazed and a little stunned when people tell me they read the Lord series and not the Hobbit. It's like they read a book without reading the first chapter. The Hobbit is the first chapter. How can you cite Lord of the Rings without knowning about Smog the Dragon? It introduces you to the Ring. It introduces you to Gollum. It introduces you to the Hobbit world, to the Wizard and pretty well everything and anything which has any importance in the series. If you read the series, you must read the Hobbit.

Probably the most detailed and loved book series ever - a great tribute to an author well before his time. The stories are highly detailed and can take a lot of dedication to get "in too" but once hooked it is easy to get lost in Middle Earth. I salute you J R R Tolkien for giving me the best autobiography of how to lead a worthy life and have fun whilst doing so.
