This was my absolute favorite book at one time, long long ago. I think I cried when it was over, like with Tolkein, the Big E, Shogun, Watership Down, and books of that ilk. I can hardly remember it now, and want to read it again.
---
Ok! I've read it again: a quickie and barely interesting. What IS remarkable is how little of it I'd remembered. The plot is about irresistible aliens who take over the earth but seem to have our best interests at heart. There are a couple of neat twists and then the fun begins at a fancy dinner party when a Ouija board starts giving out real answers. Clarke mixes in science and mysticism but the whole effect is uninspiring. I was nearly bored. What a shame! I think I should not reread childhood favorites. Sentimentally, I will leave the rating as a 5-star, though if I'd encountered this book today for the first time, I would likely not have finished it.

Amazing, thought provoking story of what happens when higher intelligent beings come to Earth.

Deservedly a classic. There are definite echos of "On the Beach" and "Children of Men" in the human reaction to their destiny. And the intertwining of science and religion is very interesting. I was intrigued by the concept of millennial precognition. Definitely thought provokingt.

I agree with others in that it is depressing, but it does leave you with a lot of questions with no answers. Is a Utopian society even possible? I don't think so. I think it would end in much the same way...even without the alien/childless society.

Read it for an English class in college and was pleasantly surprised by this sci-fi novel! I'd say give it a try as it is a pretty quick read that will open your mind with questions.

A somber read, yet well worth it. What is humanity, anyway? We think we know so much, yet we know so little. We should be humble and reverent toward the universe, and realize we are just one piece of a magnificent puzzle. This book does what great literature should: it makes one think.

Great ending reveal, but a bit heavy-handed on the nuts and bolts of describing a utopia.
