If you are going to read any book about the Civil War, READ THIS BOOK. Shaara captures the Battle of Gettysburg in perfect detail, breathing life into the men who fought and died during those three days in 1863. An excellent case study in leadership as well as a great introduction to the most turbulent period in American history.

I am in awe of this book. It is one of the most amazing Civil War books I have read. The work is historical fiction, but it still gives a very accurate sense of the mindsets and attitudes of the war, as well as amazing detail about the respective battles and men involved. You really feel as though you are right there, living each moment. Definitely my favorite book ever!

Excellent reading! The best novel so far that I have read about the American Civil War. Was eventually made into the movie "Gettysburg".

This book started me on reading historical fiction. It's about the battle of Gettysburg and the events leading up to it. It really puts a human face to both sides of the battle/war.

The movie "Gettysburg" was made from this book." I thought it was great! The other two books in the series were written by Shaara's son -I enjoyed them as well.
