In this book, Thomas Covenant says: "How do you hurt a man who has lost everything? You give him
back something broken."

Ironically enough, Stephen R. Donaldson has, in resurrecting the Covenant mythos for a second epic
trilogy, given the reading public back one of fantasy's strongest and most nuanced characters in
a way that makes him more engaging and heroic than ever before.

Reading this book I was struck by how much more accessible it is than the first chronicles... yet still nothing like any fantasy book I have ever read.

This is a truly great fantasy story. The problem is that it is written ridiculously badly. It's like Donaldson had a big Roget's Thesaurus by his side as he wrote this book, trying to make it more Literature, and less story, in the process embarrassing himself massively. I shudder to think how bad it would have been if it hadn't have been edited.Best example of terrible use of English in the book (off the top of my head) - something about the valley Covenant was in having nystagmus. Nystagmus is a condition of double or blurred vision. How the hell a valley is supposed to have any kind of vision, let alone faulty vision, is beyond me... Why the hell use a fancy word when normal English would suffice, and also not make you look a fool?As I said - a great story, terribly written.

The entire series of these books, is awesome. I got hooked many years ago while I was in 6th form at school, picked up the first one and didn't stop reading until I'd finished them all. Fantastic stuff.

Read the first trilogy years ago and just re-read recently. Starting on this second part as something new.

Always thought Donaldson was a pale, Tolkien wannabe derivative, and still do, but am fascinated by Thomas Covenant, the main character, which keeps me coming back.

There's better out there. The world Donaldson has created is a weak tea rip-off of Middle Earth.

Stephen Donaldson was brought impressive power to the page in his first chrinicles of Thomas Covenant. He surpasses himself with the second chronicles, maturing the story and characters allowing the reader to feel as infected as the land he describes. In the second Chronicles Thomas Covenant returns to the land in a dramatic blaze of fire summoned by his old enemy Lord Foul. He finds the land has changed int he time he has been away. The beutiful and healing land Donaldson created in the first set of books has been replaced with a warped and diseased place ruled by the Sun Bane nad controlled by the Clave. Both these are the work of Lord Foul who has corrupted everything that made the land a place to love and cherish. If you have ever wanted to know what it would be like if the bad guy won here is your chance to find out. This is the first of three books in the second chrinicles all of which are superbly written and gripping pieces of literature. A MUST READ!!
