AIVAS, a computer left behind by the original colonists of Pern, is rediscovered. Society has changed and much knowledge has been lost since Pern was first settled. AIVAS can help reteach that lost knowledge, and perhaps helpl end threadfall forever, but not without bringing many changes and technological advances. Not everyone is happy about the new technologies or convinced that thread can, or should, be stopped.

I love the Pern books; unfortunately I have not managed to read them in order. This one is slightly different from the earlier novels, as we are introduced to AIVIS (Artificial Intelligence Voice Address System) who teaches the people of Pern almost everything they have forgotten since 'Landing.' The ultimate aim of this book is the destruction of Thread; it did seem a bit weird to me to have dragons in space, but it was beautifully done.

Watching the Avatar movie trailer makes me long for All the Weyrs of Pern and the other Pern novels to come alive on the big screen in a series of about six movies! Like Harry Potter. Only with more dragon sex!

Anne McCaffery writes with a "human" touch. A good story with a feeling for people and how they react with one another. On one hand it is set in the future with dragons costarring with the people in this book on the other it is about the kind of people I have known. I like it very much for its gentleness.

Being an all time fan of Pern, this book was the ultimate finish, the Pernese finally triumphing over the dreaded Thread. Made me cry buckets too when Robinton passed. All of that said, Jaxom is still not one of my favourite Pernese.

Once again, I fell for another book about Pern. After reading The Renegades of Pern, I was excited to read on and discover how the populates of Pern were going to use the new wisdom/technology they had uncovered. McCaffrey certainly delivered with a tale of enlightment, struggle, and good old fashioned entertainment. For all those truly invested in the series I'm issuing a tear jerker alert! With so many books on my shelf, I'm trying to stay away from the next title to prolong the series for as long as possible, but no promises can be made!

I love several of the Pern books, but this one brings out a lot of the problems that developed with stretching out the material... the repetitiveness is deathly. I'm not saying this to be critical - I love Pern, and it's always wonderful to spend time with the principal characters from Dragon Flight to Dragon Drums - they're fantastic characters, and it's been wonderful to ride around on dragonback with them, and it's a killer when Robinton died with little Zair behind him, but if they drink one more cup of Klah (with klah italicized for NO REASON WHATSOEVER) I'm going to have to throw the book across the room. There's a problem with creating a limited agrarian society - the flavor and details that fill a novel are necessarily limited, and it's become grating.

I love Anne McCaffrey, she is just one of those authors that once you start reading her work you just can't stop. Well, with All The Weyrs of Pern, who would? Beautifully written and majestically calculated, AIVAS has just the right personality for an AI, and really bring the stroy to light in a way that without him, the story could not live any other way.
