I am now re-reading the entire series, which I have enjoyed greatly. From Harry Turtledove, author of 'The Guns of the South' comes the World War series. This is less a science fiction book than a 'what if' senario, or as it is commonly refered; alternate history. Opening: Spring of 1942. As fighting between the forces of the Axis and the Allies heats up, aliens invade with the intent to concure Earth. The invasion force, some 20 million strong, were expecting a realtive cakewalk based on the data the received from their remote probe some 800 years before. (After all, how much could a place change in only 800 years?) To the aliens chagrin, they find not sword wielding barbarians on horseback, but guns, tanks, warships, airplanes, and horror of horrors, the beginings of atomic research. The warring factions quickly come to truce to fight this much greater menace. While the aliens fighting equipment is roughly on a par with early 21st century warcrafts, and easily capable of destroying the humans machines at a rate of 50 to 1, they only have what they have bought with them, and no means to replace those that are lost. Meanwhile the human's equipment is getting better and better. The aliens, who measure change in terms of centuries and millinia, are astonished at the human's ability to adept. Who will win this new version of history, and will the Earth survive the battle? A great read, as is the series.

During the middle of WWII alien invaders show up and attack the Earth. The Axis and Allies must work together to survive. Oddly enough, this doesn't go very smoothly. Turtledove clearly based this on the idea of "How would the Axis and Allies have fared against the late 80's US military" The Lizards (the aliens) are militarily equal to the US circa 1988. Great actions, dozens of well developed characters, the whole Worldwar series is worth picking up and reading.

I'm not a big fan of alien invasion type stories (although I am a fan of alternate history)...but to make the premise that aliens choose to invade in the middle of WW II was just too good to pass up. I'm glad I didn't. The entire series is a great read and lots of fun.

I have to agree with "Oliver" who posted a review above exactly. An excellent idea: Alien invasion of Earth during WW2. But most of the focus is on mundane conversation and relationships while little things like the nuclear obliteration of Washington and Berlin are glossed over. Nontheless the premise is so good I do still want to find out what happens next.

Without a doubt this series (Worldwar) and the companion series (Colonization), are superb. It took me 50 pages to get into this book --- invaders from space?, lizards? ... But I am so glad I stuck it out. It's the story of mankind - - who we are and what we can be. Everytime the next installment would come out, I would be pre-ordered on a waiting list. It's the kind of book you really can't tell someone about without having them look at you like you're insane, but I promise you if you are a fan of alternate fiction by the time you get to page 51 of this book you will be hooked.

Alternate history of WW2...at the height of our global conflict an alien armada known only as The Race, invade our tormented world. Smashing aside most resistance immediately, they surprise the major powers with their advanced technology and swarm the globe. Being tencious and fierce in our own ways, the human empires turn their warring eyes towards the new enemey and try to put their own hateful feelings aside. A great concept based on the what if?? things happened a differnt way. Harry Turtledove hears it time and again, but he is the Master of Alternate History, an absoultely amazing series(i read them all)leaves you craving more, in fact he realeased a continutating 3 novel set called Colonization, takes place 20yrs after this one. Pick them up and check them out, youll love em.
