This author died for irony...on the way home from the gym he had a heart attack. I love the way that he says what I'd say if I had an ounce of his talent for humor and words. I still remember the first time I got on the rollercoaster that is "The Hitchhiker's Guide" back in high school.

This is one of my one night readers - it was hilarious and it touched on my interests in the universe and the concept of god in a way that amused me. I quote it in my first lecture for astronomy classes where it says "Space is big..." which is one of my primary themes. And I love the whale contemplating the meaning of life as he falls to Magrathea - while the pots of flowers just comment "Oh no, not again." It got me hooked on the entire series.

This and the rest of the books are too fun. Douglas Adams is a master of descriptive narrative. He takes you places and shows you things you would never have thought possible. Have you ever wondered what a whale might think the few seconds it is alive because it has popped into existence in the sky and falling rapidly to the earth?

One of those pivotal books after which you never quite look at things the same way again. And one of those rare things: the prose and events are told like life is; jumbled and strange and you sort of wander through with a bemused look on your face and curse and laugh whenever an incongruous detail turns up to bite the crew in the future. Hilarious and a classic.

Unfortunately I cannot be objective about this book at all as its influence on me has been far too thoroughly thorough for that to be possible, but I adore this book and its related spin-offs to the extent that I almost feel bad that I have no real interest in joining its official fun club. Plot cohesion wise it's certainly not the greatest thing in the Western Canon, but in terms of "Goodness, that was brilliant" moments I find it pretty much peerless, as well as being witty, profound and funny. Bravo.

Definitely, my most favorite book. It somehow shaped also our current networking society: the first Internet servers were often named like Zaphod, Marvin, Frodo etc. Also Radiohead and their album OK Computer, ...

Funny, irreverent, and totally English. Douglas Adams proved that in the evolutionary chain it's the funny bone that was first useful human adaptation. Arthur Dent is the everyman, surely the butt of the universe's bigger prank--Life! The philosophical bent is not serious, which is probably why this book is a kind of cult classic that has taken on a life of it's own.

One of the most overrated books in history. I know a lot of people love this book, and I honestly don't know why. Is it because it's supposed to be "cool" to like it? It does have a few funny ideas (42!) but overall, I didn't care about any of the characters and the humor was so-so. The depressed robot was pretty adorable though. I wish the whole book was about him.

A friend turned me on to Douglas Adams when I was in junior high, and I'm positive that the off-beat and hilariously sarcastic/insightful "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" helped turn me into the geek that I am today. I still recognize the value in traveling with towels and know to run if someone starts reading any poem about a lump of green puttty found under their armpit...

hitchhikers guide to galaxy defines a greet book as " a string of sentences written in lucid cellulose , which makes the reader realize every every emotion he is ever going to imagine , from the slight tingling sensation in ears during the infinite improbability drive to the rather strange sense of euphoria when getting vaporized when hit with a inter galactic blaster " ..... "DON'T PANIC" by my review ... just read the book ;)

Some people can't see what all the fuss is about over HHG... but maybe they weren't there at the time when it was first released on the radio! It completely re-wrote the rules, I'd never heard or read anything like it. I still love it to bits, for the breadth and depth of Douglas Adams's imagination and his clever, sharp and witty writing. A hoopy frood who definitely knew where his towel was. (RIP Douglas.)
