This is definately a book that is very different, it is full of dry english humor, and strange explanation by the babblefish translater that sits in your ear. The earth explodes but that not the end because just before it all happens Arthur Dent is wisked off and saved, meeting weird and wonderful people and creatures and a robot that should be on anti-depressants, the book I believe is far better and so was the television series the movie was a terrible flop as the robot for one didnt match up to the Series or the book. Give it a look and prepare for a few chuckles.

I love, love, love, this book. In my top ten for sure. The aloof humour, imagination and characters you encouter in this book are just a joy to read. One of a few books I'd actually love to live in. Please let there be an encyclopedia out there whose entry for earth was amended from "harmless" to "mostly harmless", just think what else could be out there. Wonderful. I will read again and again. Plus I can really recommend the BBC radio adaptation of these books for those who like an audiobook for those long journeys.

I found this at an airport prior to a long flight and before it's popularity with the movie. I sat in the chair waiting for the flight call and started laughing uncontrollably. My daughter and her friend thought I was insane, as did my husband. Even when I read it out loud they didn't get it. That said; if you need a good laugh, and boy are the british subtle, this is perfect. It was excellent for a long boring flight; as long as you don't get kicked off the plane for laughing out loud. Eclectic.

As Adams would have said, many races believe that the creation of the Universe made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move. For several reasons we, that is, humanity, desperately craves people who invert that which we hold to be immutable and containing Truth. Douglas Adams was one such writer.Though, truthfully, not in and of itself quite on a par with someone with the critical functions of Dostoevsky, however, one cannot help but gleefully fascinate over the charming wit and satire of a unique and radical talent. The Hitchhikers Guide pokes fun at every conceivable human achievement and reduces it to the level of the absurd - and rightly so. Adams' satire was a Copernican moment in the history of satire... no really!

So many "enemy" this book has so many supporters it has certainly.
I have seen the movie first and then read the book and felt the book as an almost-flop.
Unstructured, confusing, perhaps just Douglas Adams, just as he lives and writes.
The idea behind the story: like it very much! I even couldn´t help smiling at some scenes.
Fans will have their fun with it.
For me the book was useless.

its a funny book, just like the eskimos have two hundred odd words describing different types of snow, this book is a good source if you want to come up with two hundred odd words describing humor. There is just funny, rollling on the floor funny, side aching funny, you know its going to be funny so you dont find it funny enough funny, there is just a smile on your face funny, smile turning into a mild laugh funny, blatant funny, blasphemous funny, absurd funny, you cant believe someone get so mundane funny, creative funny, eccentric funny and sometimes constant mind numbing you need a break from funny funny..well there is more but guess you can just read the book for details.i almost forgot there is a tad bit of sci fi in it too..

After reading this book, I now understand some of my friends in high school better. They had all read, loved, and practically memorized this book. This is the first book in a five book trilogy (and yes that makes sense, about as much sense as the rest of the book). Arthur Dent escapes the destruction of the earth by mere seconds with the galactic traveler Ford Prefect, who is revising the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. They meet up with Trillian and Zaphod Beeblebrox and travel the universe and escape certain death, all on the power of improbability. And it never hurts to have a chronically depressed robot too.

This was a very strange book, I'm not sure what the point of it was. I might read the rest of them, but it won't be any time soon.

Each line of the Hitchhiker saga, contains more jokes then whole chapters in other books. Adams crams each paragraph with so much intelligent wit and humor, it sometimes can be quite a challenge to keep up with. His world is a universal sandbox of randomness, chaos, comedy, errors and little tragedies. And we are overwhelmed at every turn by the constant flood of imaginative, border surrealistic situations, events and characters. In the middle of this cascading avalanche of cosmic awkwardness, is everman protagonist - Artur Dent. Who discovered one Thursday morning that his house is about to be demolished, that his best friend is an alien and that the earth is about to be destroyed. And after escaping the ruins of what was his home-planet at the last second, well, that's when it all begins.

This is a comment on the entire 5 part trilogy BTW
These books are so random they verge on schizophrenia, the caterwaul from one area to another jumping off subject every few pages for a extensive explanation on increasingly bizarre subjects ranging from psychic elevators, to planet made of shoes and beyond, utilizing Adams unique perspective on a multitude of usual sci-fi subjects (time travel etc..) to make you laugh out loud nearly every page.

Plot Summaries and the like are pointless because the voyagers guide through the galaxy is as random as Douglas's sense of humor, and also I could never give it a genre...it just is.

I might be a comment on my personality that one of the strangest books I've ever read is also the funniest, but that is the allure of the writings of one of the most funny, creative, and brilliant man I've ever read. Read just a few pages and immediately you'll decide if you love or hate this unique book.

This is one of my favorite books. It is really easy to read and really really fun. Douglas uses such simple yet elegant language that by reading it makes aspiring authors just want to throw in the towel(but then we remember you can't travel the galaxy unless you have your towel) because he tells such a wonderful tale with so much useless fun knowledge and strange way of describing things and extreme characters like Zaphod, the alien with two heads or Marvin the manically depressed robot or Eddie the always glad to see you computer from the Heart of Gold. It's such a fun adventure and I can't wait to read the rest of his books.

A book where the main character Artur Dent spends most of his time looking for a good cup of British tea is a brilliant book for me. Forget about the wonders of a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, a cup of tea works wonders for the soul...

And the story goes on, 42, well it's best to know what the question is first.. Babel fish, a huge encyclopedia/travel guide and the immortal words... DON'T PANIC, carry a towel.

One of the most original and funny books I've ever read. Great on radio and TV as well.. (Ignore the recent film adaptation because something went wrong. Before I read the books by Douglas Adams, I thought I was strange. Thanks for everything, especially all the fish.

I can't say enough about how funny and insightful the "Hitchhiker's Guide" series of books are. They are one of the few works of fiction which make me laugh outright...almost uncontrollably at times. And the way that Douglas Adams incorporates complex ideas of space, time and physics in ways that are both readily grasped and mindbogglingly thought-provoking makes most scientistific explanantions seem retarded. These books are like "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" for the sci-fi crowd. Even the really disappointing ending.

One of my favorite books of all time. The wit and humor Adams uses as he parodies and satirizes classic science fiction and comments on human foibles is wonderful. The first 2 books (Hitchhikers Guide to the GalaxyDouglas Adams had a way with words. This novel and the immediate sequel are my favorites of the 5 book "trilogy." My introduction was via BBC radio productions, but I stopped listening and read the books instead - much more satisfying!...and funnier by far! If you have only had experience through the recent movie, you need to forget the movie and read the first two books: "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe." They'll twist your mind and tickle your funny bone. If you have read lots of classic Sci-Fi (Asimov, Heinlein, etc.) they will make you roar with the spoofs, send-ups, and satire...if not with the irony.

I love all of Douglas Adams' books. I've been known to laugh out loud in public places while reading these. Truly a joy in this day and age.
Funny, dry, silly sense of humor. It will be up your alley if you like Monty Python or Spinal Tap. DON'T PANIC.

First of all.. aint sure which of the versions i read :-D... Is a really funny book! Apart from the eccentricities of all characters involved... it sort of sometimes levels into.. well. level into... what else than the Ultimate Question and Answer.. ha ha.. where the answer seems typically at first quizzically and then extremely funny number.. Anyways the downside for all the build up for the creator's last message ends up with a rather infinitely obvious piece of information. But with all the improbable sci fi stuff packed into it... oh by the way... if u watched the movie before.. too bad.. chuck it off ur head before u read... it would be much better. And if u haven't.. which would be improbably enough to drive the Heart of Gold around the entire galaxy... good for u!

If absurdity was an art and if there was a wax museum for it, I would place or rather make one these. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the galaxy should be regarded as a new branch in absurd art and most of all a new branch in science (absurd) fiction.Dont disregard this review as a negative one. This is wholly intentional and I would like you readers to take this as a complementary comment from a humble readers. The improbability drive and the most depressed robot in the universe steals the show. The last statement from the creators of the universe were also hilarious. My parting words would be:"Sorry for the incovenience and kindly adjust with what you have given for I was given only one shot and I failed."

Why should you always have a towel at hand when you go hitch-hiking? Does a person become a hoopier frood by having another head implanted? Who received the prize for the design of the most beautiful fjords? Who invented the Pangalactic Gargleblaster, the most famous alcoholic drink in the Universe? And which charitable organizations will help you recover from the consequences of drinking it? All these and many more facts can be learnt from the electronic Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy (published by Megadodo Publications on Ursa Minor Beta), or from the eponymous book by Douglas Adams. Laughter guaranteed!

Now that I've reread all 4 books of the trilogy, more times than I have bothered to keep track of, I'm starting to notice little things that could have been better written.

However, I started reading these when I was, what? Maybe 13, maybe 15 and I'm now 41! If it takes that long to get annoyed by the mistakes in a book, then it's a book worth a good looking into by everyone.

The fifth book of the trilogy, I only read twice. It was a bit more depressing.

I cannot view these as separate pieces of literature, though.

This book just saved me from a depresseion, by showing me the irony of everything that is going on around us, and how bizar it is, how unexplainable. Arthur Dent is a wonderfully confused earthling going through the whole adventure without really knowing how to react to all the bizarre things that are happening around him. Just like in our everyday life. I like the depressed robot and all the other strange being that is so alike some of the people you know or read about. And the whole quest for the answer to Life, Universe and Everything that just boils down to a few numbers, just shows how unimportent he thinks our earth, our solar system and even our universe is.
This book just appeal to my sense of adventure and the bizarre. I like the confused Arthur Dent going through the whole thing not quite sure what is happening and how to react. I like the depressed robot and the whole universe of strange beings who does seems a lot like some people you know or read about. The whole notion of our planet and solar system not being very importent and for that matter the whole universe and existence not to be taken too serious. The whole search for the meaning of like broken down to a few numbers, because we really are unable to figure it out, that just saved me from a depression.
