Another TRIPLE 5STAR RATING. This book is like no other... Every time I read it, I can feel the despair and pain so realistic it takes my breath away.... then a few pages later I am laughing and crying with the characters. This is truly an EPIC book. Anne Rice will never top this story.

This book got me hooked on Anne Rice. Intensely riveting, this rich story makes you question life, destiny and the prospect of fate. While sometimes difficult to read because of the vivid images, its an excellent story about making peace with what life hands you, even when its neither what you expect or want.

This is my all time favorite book. Anne Rice is brilliant. The contrast between mental torture and rockstar worship the castrati lived through is fascinating. However, if your the least bit homophobic you better skip this one.

A young Italian noble is forced by his scheming brother to become a castrato and tutored by an older, bitter castrato who was once famous but whose voice didn't withstand the test of puberty. This book contains some wonderful, wonderful descriptions of Venice and Italy, especially its nighttime masked carnivals. Anne Rice also seems to excel at depicting complicated mother-son relationships. But by gods is this a heavy read. Though I suppose living in seclusion with your crazy mother then having your balls cut off by force would make a man emo.

How I missed the lush writing and opulent worlds of Anne Rice! I very much enjoyed the journey I took in "Cry To Heaven" and loved the vivid Italian landscapes that Rice has painted. (In general I enjoy the Venetian setting in stories.) I felt the characters and became deeply engrossed in the tale of Tonio Treschi. The novel is now one of my favorite works of Rice. A fine and marvelous read!

Hate the cover - makes the book look cheap and nasty when it is a lovely historical story of the life and times of the Castrati.

This is one of the most beautiful novels I've read by Anne Rice. Both dark and delicious, Anne breathes life into a subject I previously knew nothing of. As a historical novel, it transcends her work with Feast of all Saints, in my opinion. Feverishly researched, a history book with mostly fictional characters that are completely believable. I feel like I've read the accounts of actual people. I'm glad I took my time with it.

This novel is about the castrati of the 17th and 18th centuries in Italy. Of the two main characters, one is a castrato by choice and the other was forced to become one. And this is the tale of their lives, the thoughts, prejudice, and music industry of the day, and how all of this affected society both outside and inside of this group of people.

Absolutely unforgettable from beginning to end, the story of this novel with sit with me forever.

The reason this book gets a C and not a B rating is the fact there were parts of this book that were entirely too long and unnecessary. Over all I liked the story, and the ending was rather nice, but some of the sex scenes (however erotically well written they were, and I enjoyed them) could have been cut. The book was intriguing, but it could have been better.

The first book I ever read by Anne Rice! Brilliantly written and captivating- I found it hard to put this book down.
A bit eurotic as it takes place in the time of the great castrati when they were worshipped as Gods and loved by all, lived life as the stars of their time. Definitely still my favorite of Rice's work. Well worth the read!

Not your usual fang in the neck yarn, but I really liked it.

It is about the castrati, young boys in 17th century Italy who had amazing singing voices were castrated in the hope that they would have brilliant soprano voices as adults. Unfortunately the success rate was low as most boys found that their voices suffered rather than blossomed.
The story is about a young patrician boy (patrician families were the ruling classes) who sang beautifully but it was forbidden for anyone from the ruling classes to be turned into castrati. This boy, however, was forced into being castrated and the plot follows the path he takes to exact revenge for his disfigurement.
Excellent read.
