Liked the book but wish it had not ended when it did. Would have liked to see 1 more week after Pope Joan, just to see the author's interpretation of everyone's reaction to the realization the pope was a woman.

I wanted to really love this book, and I did like it a lot, I just can't quite gush about it. I found it interesting, I learned a lot about the catholic church during the 9th century, and it was particularly interesting to learn what state Italy was in at the time. It just took about 150 pages before I felt like the book really got going. I think the subject was thoroughly researched, and most of the story was engaging. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone interested.

Sparks the study of history. Makes one wonder about the bias of historical writing that suit one's own interest/ambitions. Definitely a novel with fictitious parts... leaves the reader wanting to know more about this time in history. The author rightfully endorses that power via educated intellect can bring about change for the better vs authoritative superstitions that end up suppressing the people through fear. This book can't help but remind the readers of the loss to society if women are not treated as intellectual equals.
