A rather dark fairy tale. The movie Enchanted, has a premise based on this book (without giving it credit)but it took the original idea in the opposite direction.

Orson Scott Card is probably best known for his Ender series, but as fas as sheer creativity and plot goes, this is his real winner. The man has a gift for fantasy and this is proof that he should explore it more.

And basically this is nothing more than a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story. It just happens to spend half of its time in our world and time, and Sleeping Beauty and Prince Charming are pretty much forced together to create some hysterical romentic comedy of people that have to learn to like one another.

But besides the cutesy factor, this is incredible complex as it draws from all sources--religion, history, and mythology. Heck, I don't know even know what else is in there, but is sure makes for a great story.

It's rare to see a novel that is at once so serious and so hilarious.

One of Card's best.

this book was absolutely fabulous! Card once again proves that he is a masterful author. He successfully mixes fairy tale with time travel with fantasy while including religion and romance. This is the third genre that Card has mastered, with Historical/Biblical Fiction (Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel/Leah: Women of Genesis series) and Science Fiction (Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow) as the other two. I have read it three times and wasn't able to put it down all three times until I was done!

I just can't get into this book, which is sad because I love Card, and I love these kinds of stories. I guess I just don't feel pulled to the protagonist.

Good. Compelling. Well-written. I could have done without the profanity and the genitals references, but, hey no one is perfect!

Lovely. I have a soft-spot for anything by Orson Scott Card, and this book clearly shows why.
I love that none of his books are simply what they seem, and that his characters are far deeper than most rivers.

I am going to read this book again, and soon.

An action story and a fairy tale in one! You've got witches, hexes, things blowing up, Russian folklore, history, and anthropological linguistics all tossed into the pot and given a thorough stirring, out of which pops this book. Baba Yaga is as foul a villain as ever, and Ivan, though he starts out as somewhat of a wussy, is more than a match for her. I loved it.

So I went to the library looking for Ender's Game. I've been meaning to read Ender's Game, also By Orson Scott Card, for a pretty long time. Supposedly it's a classic sci-fi novel and everybody I know who's read it, loves it. So finally I decided it was time, and of course the bloomin' library didn't have it. Nor did they have If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino. That's another book I've been meaning to read. Okay, so in typical storyteller fashion, I found my way to the new releases where I happened to chance upon... Blablabla. I think you've figured it out.
I've been in this reading streak lately, where every book I read is only sort of good. The next couple of reviews are going to show that. In fact right now I'm reading what is turning out to be a sort of good novel. The only good thing about this is that the pace of reading is fairly quick, and at least the books aren't getting worse. But how do you rate a 'sort of good' book? I mean, what number (one through ten) relates to 'sort of good'? Now of course you're thinking, "Five, obviously." So now I have to tell you that no, five for me is really just an average book, and leaning on bad in fact. It's like saying "this book was awfully close to being bad, but if a certain element had changed in it, it could have been (and here it is) 'sort of good'".
So now I'll let you in on a secret. When I don't know what to give a book, when I'm at a loss for a rating, and comparing a book to all my other ratings doesn't help any, I give the book a seven. I think this is where the rating system really starts. If I can say, "This book was good." It automatically gets an eight and then works it's way up from there. So I guess six would have to be the 'sort of good' rating. It's like when someone asks, "was it good?" And I can't say anything but, "Well, sort of, but I can't commit..." That means the book will almost definitely get a six.
Now this is why there aren't that many low ratings. Simply cause I've spaced everything improperly. Of course, this would be a perfect segueway to my review if Orson Scott Card hadn't spaced Enchantment properly, or the printers had double spaced the entire book, but of course, I'm not that good with segueways.
This book was surprisingly decent (sort of good). I say that because I pretty much loathe every fantasy novel to come across my palate, and especially fairy tale-ish ones. But still the whole 'modern day fairy tale with a twist' thing got my attention and so I picked it up. You could put the word 'twist' on a bag of lice and I'd be interested.
It's about a little boy in Russia who discovers a sleeping beauty and then moves to America. Many years later (twenty or thirty) he goes back and of course she's still there. So he fights off a giant bear and kisses her and visits her world and she visits his and there's danger and humor and romance to boot. It's really pretty alright. The 'twist' I would have to say is the characterizations, the main character doesn't fit the established rules of fairy tale-isms, all he's got is a good heart and he runs really fast. Um, the story is also about not fitting in, but never quitting and the like.
I'd also like to say that this isn't a fairy tale at all so much as a folk tale (the difference being?) and it tries to confuse folk tales with actual history which is pretty interesting. And there are a couple of unexpected surprises too (as opposed to those expected ones).
But the best thing about this book is the characters. I liked all of them. Even the bad ones. They all had redeemable qualities, or they died. Really, this is the best collection of characters I've read about in a while.

I REALLY enjoyed this book, a play on the "actual" Sleeping Beauty fairy tale but telling the "true" story... Just a great story, one that holds your attention all the way through. Highly recommended.

A nice little piece of whimsy. Not quite up to my standards of quality fantasy, but still possessed a good story with well-developed characters. The ending seemed a bit of a cop-out, but you have to end a book somehow.

A russian boy who dosent know he's jewish until he's 10 and the mohel shows up. But that's OK cos it's not til he's in his 20's that he finds out that fairy tales are real, his uncle's a god, and his mother's a witch.
A very well crafted, inteligent, and thoroughly believable tale.

A wonderful twist on a classic fairytale. Card delivers his clever wit through Ivan and Katerina, as well as presenting a troubling conundrum for them to figure out and a healthy dose of romance. A fantastic blend of comedy, romance, legend, and mystery. Not to be missed!
