A good read, but it was a bit odd for a Vampire Chronicles book...

I think this is one of Anne Rice's Best.
It stands out from all the rest of the Vampire chronicle. It's vivid, passionate, sensual, and violently graphic. It just delivers.

So far, this has been my favorite of the Vampire Chronicles. It makes you wonder - how often do we underestimate others? How often do we overestimate ourselves? What's really possible, if we decide to do something...? Even Lestat has to reconsider what he believes...

 Fourth in the Vampire Chronicles.

Lestat, ever the angsty immortal, recieves an intriguing proposition from Raglan James, a con man who offers to switch bodies.

Lestat, who seldom looks before he leaps, gets in over his head once again. Despite many warning signs that there is more to Raglan's offer than meets the eye, Lestat agrees to the body switch and has mixed feelings about his recaptured humanity. He finds that being human is not exactly the way he remembers it. He keeps thinking, "Only a few more hours to go until I can get my body back." Unfortunately, Raglan has no intention of returning Lestat's body.

For mature readers.

I think it has a quite weak story. There are many things that does not have much sense. A real person wouldn't be so stupid as Lestat, and after some hundred years living he should be wiser. Anne Rice doesn't make characters that seems real...

Just when you think The Vampire Lestat could not possibly top his escapade with the Queen of the Damned, he pulls off the ultimate trick ... becoming human again. His encounter and eventual body switch with the seedy Raglan James, thief extraordinaire, allows Lestat to return to the human condition, while James claims the exquisite, immortal vampire body.

Predictably, having ignored the warnings of his friends against such an act, the passionate and headstrong Lestat too late realizes his mistake. He detests his human form and longs to return to his masterful vampire body. But the cunning James has put his own "dark trick" into play. Ignoring the agreed upon appointment to switch back, he makes off with Lestat's body, presumably for good.

"The Tale of the Body Thief" showcases Rice's genius at character development and how she empowers those characters to seduce, challenge, mystify, teach and entertain us. Oh, Anne Rice, perhaps you are the true brat!

This time around, it was delightful to read a story told by Lestat, and almost told in dialogues.

I think the strongest part of this book is simply the reduction of the world, being an specific time and only on one point of view. I did miss a lot of characters from the Vampire Chronicles, but I do have to accept that it grew as a more intimate story without them.
David is, for me, one of the best things in the book. As for the body thief and everything surrounding the main plot... well, it was interesting, yet I still feel that when you read Anne Rice, it's not about the plot, but about the characters.

A delightful read, and yes, one of my favorite from the Vampire Chronicles.
