An excellent collection of the puritan swordsman Solomon Kane. When you compare these stories to the ones written about King Kull and Conan the Cimmerian, you get a good sense of Robert Howard's development as a writer.

One of the coolest non-Conan creations of R.E.H.

From the pen of Robert E. Howard comes Solomon Kane, the sword-swinging Puritan warrior who takes on all comers, from the regular bandits and highwaymen to the supernatural. Its a short story format, like his other tales, but it is easier to construct a narrative from these than the Conan tales.

This was the first writings from Howard that I had the oppurtunity to read and it did not disapoint! Kane is a puritan wandering the world. Sounds kinda weird, and it is. These stories are filled with weird pagan horrors that send Kane into a horrific violent madness. A collection of short stories and poems, really not one to be missed by any fan of pulpy weird adventure stories.

I'd be surprised if Steven King wasn't thinking of Kane a little bit in his "Dark Tower" stories.

Excellent work from Howard. "Different" from the Conan works but in the same vein. Solomon is very much the savage - but a tamed savage who views the world in black and white, right and wrong. Driven forward relentlessly to correct what is against God. Good read.

A fantastic conflicted character in a fascinating setting. It's unfortunate Howard never got to complete more of these tales.

I loved Conan so my friend recommended I read these. Overall Kane is a much more sympathetic hero than Conan. He's got more human emotion around him and being a puritan figure sees women as more than pieces of meet.If nothing else I recommend reading this for the brilliant main character and to show that Howard can write more than barbarians.

Solomon Kane is the brainchild of Robert E. Howard, albeit the forgotten, lesser-known brainchild hiding in the shadows of Conan and Kull. Solomon Kane is a Puritan who explores Europe and Africa, battling evil. At first his adventures are straightforward, but in later stories, we begin to wonder where ideology and pathology meet-- does Kane just really hate evil, or is he nuts? Also, Howard's treatment of race changes in these stories. Early tales, such as "Red Shadows," make me cringe with depictions of Africans as little more than wild animals. In later stories, however, Kane goes on to help rescue slaves and befriends a sorcerer. Good vs. Evil isn't interesting; muddling the distinction between the two is. While these stories may not all be on par with the Conan stories, they do give us a new perspective into the mind of Howard. And NO ONE can write a battle sequence like REH.

swashbuckling, sacrifices, vampires, and plenty of action and a daring sword wielding English Puritan! This is what an adventure/fantasy should be all about. Fun Stuff.

n 1928 Robert E. Howard (creator of, among others, Conan The Cimmerian) made his first real splash with the readers of Weird Tales in the form of Solomon Kane the manic puritan adventurer! According to Howard he first came up with the idea of Kane in high school, a charcter that only cared about righting wrongs and doing gods work. For many REH fans, myself included, Kane is Howard's most poetic series charcter, considering the fact that he wrote more poems about this charcter than any other this would seem to hold up.

A good collection of pulp stories from the early 1930's focused on a secondary adventure character of the genre. If you are well-versed and interested in reading Tarzan and Allan Quartermain, the exploits of the adventurous puritan may strike your fancy. Probably a little obtuse for those not familiar with the genre.

Please do not let this be your intro to REH. My main issue is the main character himself. Things happen to and around Solomon Kane unlike King Kull and Conan who make things happen. Think stalker version of Mr.Magoo with roid rage. A lot of people love him. I do not. Too bad because the writing is in ways better than average and the presentation in this edition is great with the huge amount of well done illustrations. .

Blazing two fisted action. A throw back to the really, really, politically incorrect days but still a lot of fun. It's a little like Indian Jones meets Tarzan meets Doctor Strange.
